I know im no where near the point at adding fish.

But once iv finished cycling, and i have to do a 75-90% water change, will it be okay to just add treated cold water from the tap, let it heat up overnight or something and then add fish? Or will this kill my bacteria?

Also what is best when doing weekly water changes, is it okay to get a bucket of water, treat it and add some warm water from the kettle to get it to tank temperature? Or is that a no no. People from the pet shop said just get another heater and heat the water up overnight then add.

Thanks
Ian

The water you add to the tank should be dechlorinated and at the same temperature.

Yup i know that.

Just wondering if filling a bucket up with tap water, then adding a little bit of boiling water from a kettle so it reaches tank water temperature, and then treating the water, would be okay.

The only reason for not using the HOT tap is b/c hot water running in your pipes over time strip and carry the heavy metals from the copper, nickel or Lead pipes that you have. Regardless it is a mute issue - Just run you HOT tap for a ~2 minutes (more depending on the 'run' from the hot water source to the sink) and this will rid you of any standing metals accumulated over night. I live in an OLD house, CIRCA 1805, and I have lead pipes and do this. I sent two tests to the State DES and the confirmed the Lead in the water, but Zero in the water after running for 2+ minutes.

If in doubt do a simple test for hardness immediately once the water gets hot and again about 2 minutes after. If the Hardness changes (it won;t be much), which it could if your are in an old home, just do what I do; if not, don't worry about it IMO

Besides, boiling water will not rid the metals, and the water has already been treated so I do not see the point, but correct me if I'm wrong please

My Cold Water comes direct from Mains supply and therfore is always 'fresh' if you can call it that (i.e. its always running).

However, my Hotwater is stored in a tank so I wouldn't use that because of the heavy metals.

To further this argument I would not fill my tanks from the bath tap as this comes from my cold water tank.

My kitchen taaps are supplied directly from mains, i.e straight from the pipes in the street. This is typical of water supply in the UK, dont know about anywhere else.

Thats why I use the kettle to raise the water temp and not the hot water supply

I never knew that places used a system like that. Very interesting. I learned something new today! :)
