I believe the 20 ppi sponges are the more coarse ones.
there is less pores per inch so the pore sizes are bigger.
I actually just use these I think on my filter. my big guys clog up fine media.

nothing wrong with it. you just said you want the tank to look as clear as possible. the more floss or sponges or mechanized filtration you have the higher chance of the water being clear.
clear to the eye and clear to the health
it will be both. i am not saying dont just like carbon it might not be needed.
In my Xp3 I have what came with it-Bio-chem Zorb(I think it's carbon), the polishing pad, and the sponges.
I ordered the one gallon of Bio Balls from Big Al's, it's like a plastic bag full of them. Think a gallon zip loc bag full, and that's the amount.
I also got ceramic rings, and those are in the filter as well.
I like the filter a lot, but I made the mistake of cutting my hoses before hooking up my co2 reactor. If you're planning on running co2 through the filter, wait to cut the hoses. Mine were a it too short, so the PVC reactor sticks out the back of the tank. Oh well.
