Is it the greatest gift to all knowledge-seekers on the internet, or is it an overestimated bust that is written based off of minimal research and writer opinion, therefore making it WRONG?

Edit: my opinion is that wiki is mostly hype, and nobody (including myself) really wants to go and look for themselves to see how much is really wrong.

Isn't that the whole idea behind the Wiki's though? Somewhere to allow people to keep adding parts to it, to eventually build up a bigger picture and operate as a knowledge base?

A simliar opinion could also be said as forums are in effect a Wiki, full of knowledge, information, history...Do we all not strive to make AC " the greatest gift to all knowledge-seekers on the internet " with regards to fish / aquaria keeping?..hmmmmmm

I heard part of this on the radio a while ago (or I think it's what I heard - the computer I'm at now doesn't have sound capability to check) - interview with the dude who started wikipedia.

I think it comes down to - be aware it might be wrong, but it's a good place to start getting some information. It's probably not really any more or less accurate than other encyclopedias (and is certainly kept up to date), and is quite probably more accurate than a lot of websites out there. Always question anything you read anyway, especially on the internet, but even in newspapers, reference texts, published peer-reviewed research articles... so use it as part of your pursuit of knowledge, but utilize other resources as well.

[Always question anything you read anyway, especially on the internet, but even in newspapers, reference texts, published peer-reviewed research articles... so use it as part of your pursuit of knowledge, but utilize other resources as well.

That's the key point.....information and misinformation travels the internet faster than any other medium....I like wiki when I need quick, general info., than dig deeper on the internet or other sources when I need more.

The idea behind it is good, but the reality is that many people see something and think its real and will defend it to the death even if they mean no harm, let alone the ones who get their kicks out of creating misinformation. unfortunatly, it is an excellent case of he who shouts loudest is correct and should never be used as more then a lead in refernce. Credible and quotable sources and actual experts are often ignored and deleted when an established and/or vocal user weighs in, and a number of mods make "special projects" out of subjects they have now knowledge of or intrest in when it comes to "cleaning up" subjects, but yet are the sole authority on if an article stays or goes or what information can be included. Admitadly, there is good in there, but too much of what i have looked at that I am am very familier with is wrong that I have a very hard time thinking that what i read but don't know is right to ever trust it.
