How can I find out about the quality of local water?

I want to find out if the water at my place would be good for any freshwater species. Our water comes from a well and is hard. I thought that if our water was good for some breed of fish it would be handy when it came time to do water changes.

there are fish that live in the rivers around here, and it would be cool if I could just get water from around here to use for changes.

Should I buy a kit and test the water then compare it to suggested parameters for certain fish, or is there a way I can find out what the water is like by checking on the web?

I wouldn't risk using untreated surface water. theres very little surface water that can be considered pure, or clean. besides parasites and disease, theres sediment, fertilizer, pesticides, manure, chemicals, petrolium and every other compund mankind is responsible for, and it all ends up in our surface water. and if you catch it after a rain, then the concentrations can be incredibly high since everything is swept into surface water.

Is it from your personal well or does your town water just come from wells?

We have our own well, it is not a town well or anything. I know that the water is hard and we have a water softener. I can get water from outside the house if the softener changes the water in a bad way.
If I use the well water, do I have to treat it or can I just use it by itself? And, are there certain FW fishes that would not do well with my well water?

It wouldn't be hard to get water from streams, there is one very close to my house(closer than the LFS or Stores), and I could get the water for free. Too bad though that it wouldn't work out, for all the reasons that have been pointed out.
