I am buying a new 10g tank tomorrow to set up in my son's room. It is going to be housing my male platies, mystery snail and danios that I currently have in my 29g tank.

I am going to use filter media from my 29g, some plants and some gravel to help seed the bacteria in the new tank.

My question is.... How long should I wait before beginning to transfer fish into the new tank? I don't want to harm my fish, nor do I want all that bacteria to die.

Ohhh one more question I just thought of...Would it help at all if I use a few gallons from my established tank in the new tank? Or should I just use all fresh water (conditioned of course)?

Thanks in advance for your help.

The water from the other tank may help a little bit, but IMO with all the media, plants, and gravel you are bringing over from the other tank, you shouldn't need the old water. I would wait about 48 hours before you bring any fish over. I would start by bring over about 3 fish. Once the tank is cycled for about a week, you can bring over the rest of the fish and the snail.

We did almost the same thing, except to a larger tank, we moved all the fish at once, wp's never moved, it's not a bad idea to wait a day or two and take some readings just to make sure, most say using some old water wont make any difference, but if the water quality is good it wouldn't hurt anything, the bio load should already be established......:)

I would also keep tabs on the temp.

They need to be the exact same if you are going to just net them and bring them over.

Oh good tip! I forgot to think about temp. It should be okay since my 29g runs at room temp and the new tank won't be near any windows or air vents and should run at the same temp.

Oh there will only be 4 fish and a snail total being moved over to the new tank. At least for now. All of my fry appear to be females.

Danios should really have 15g+, IMO, because of how active they are, and have at least 6 in their group because of their AC-renouned schooling. JMO, though :)

I would say move everything over, let it runs 2-3 days, and test the water. If everything is stable (0 ammonia, 0 nitrites, nitrates 10-20), add the fish.

My Danios are over a year old. I only have 2 left and I will not be replacing them. I have to get them out of the 29g though because the tank is getting very full of female platies. That's why all my male platies (which unfortunately are not very many) are getting a new tank and I am going to let my Danios "retire" there.

i would transfer the danios first just to make sure the tank is fully cycled, but i would wait a couple of days or a week before adding any fish at all to the tank.

Can the bacteria live that long without anything to feed off of?
