A 55 dwarf puffer and tetra tank? Aren't dwarf puffers brackish and aggressive, or are you talking about something else?

This is a freshwater puffer (Tetraodon travancoricus), originally from Indian. They are territorial and have these little battles for their area within the tank. Almost looks like a dance, while they square up head-to-tail and circle around, until darting off after each other. They will also tail nip other fish, and it’s the reason why the guppies are no longer sharing a tank with the puffers (as well as the puffers being slow, picky eaters). The tetras, I think, are either too big or too fast for the puffers to bother them. Also great if you want to rid the tank of snails…they suck that escargot right out of the shell. They are a neat little fish with eyes like a chameleon…going in different directions.

Anyway, I’m setting up the 75 right now; getting out my plastic plants (ugh!); and going to push the cycle by seeding the tank with rock from an existing tank. Guppies and goldfish, it will be. I also can’t see loosing any adult guppies to the goldfish. With the buggie eyes and slow swimming ability, can’t see it happening.

Thanks everyone.

Why not just switch them all over and throw the filters on. Instant cycle. Or is that what your going to do and my just waking up from a nap is boggling my mind!

I say this with great ignorance, because it’s the one thing I’m an expert at (see below my screen name)…even throwing media (stones), the same water, the same filter (fluval 404), and some plants (even thought the piggy goldfish will decimate the live plants), the tank will still cycle…albeit a “mini” cycle. I’m still going to wait maybe 3 – 5 days, testing nitrates (ammonia and nitrites) to make sure the fish are safe to toss into the tank. I know the goldfish can take tremendous abuse, withstanding the entire cycle…but the guppies are a little bit more sensitive. Not in any rush. I’m a little sad seeing more tanks disappearing out of my house (or should I say my wife’s house??).

Well, I’ve gone full circle. Originally interested in combining cold water stuff.

Thanks everyone for helping me go through this process. You helped with my thought process. What has finally happened is that the turtle is still alone and the goldfish are still by their lonesome. I have combined the puffers/tetras with the guppies, and put a divider in the 75g to keep them separate. Here’s a pic:

By keeping out the goldfish, I’m able to keep my plants without them becoming goldfish food. It has also allowed me to knock down two 55 gallon tanks. The boss is happy. I’m not!:shakehead: I’ll try selling the tanks/stands on craigslist…although I know I won’t get much.

Thanks once again.

Yeah.... thinking that way is how i lost $30 worth of endlers to a half-blind 3-inch black moor overnight.

I currently have a baby RES with 2 goldfish, they are all about the same size will the turtle try to hurt the fish even as a baby?
