Help, what is wrong with my tank?

How long do you keep the lights on? Typically more than 8hrs/day can cause excessive algae. How often do you do water changes and how much water do you change each time? Most of us do weekly water changes (on the same day of the week) and change at least 50% of the water.

Why the reduced water level? Fill that sucker up. LOL! Sorry, my OCD..

Yes, same thing. The ones advertised as 'melamine blocks' are less likely to have other additives. The original Magic Eraser didn't have additives, but some of the new ones do, so buy with caution.
