Mermaid, your boy is a veiltail. You say you just got him, so the chances are he's still young and his tail might keep growing. Could also have some spade tail in him, but from what I've seen, those are extremely rare and unlikely. Spade tail: More info on spade tails here...

A temporary solution depending on the fish and what you want to do with them once they're grown, but you could try adding some fry (probably livebearers would be best) that she could take care of and watch grow.
