You could keep it for giving a fish an Epsom salt bath. I have a 1 gal too, I really do think that they are useless except for short term housing. Perhaps you could exchange it?

The different tetras do not school together. You could do a school of each kind if your tank is large enough.

If you have bettas, ADFs, or other animals that surface to take in air, be sure to allow room for them. The Aquaclear will work fine with a higher water level. In fact I find that it works better with a higher level than a lower level.

I'm sorry about the problems you and your fish are having, Danny. As well as what everyone else said, could you post how big the tank is and what kinds of fish and how many you have? Also how long has the tank been set up?

With such small containers, you'll have to do a lot of water changes to keep the water quality acceptable. (Also, to me, personally, it is boring looking at a fish in a small tank where he can't swim around much or do much of anything.) I think you and the fish would be better off with...

Maybe your platies are dying, though you can't see it yet. Please please please go to your local fish store and get test kits for ammonia and nitrite. Test every day for this new tank and do partial water changes if either amount is >0 on the tests.

I would also be concerned about predators (cats, maybe raccoons?).

I rinse out the lumps from the filter media every week in old water when I do a water change. I replace the media every few months, but put in a snippet of the old media to get the bacteria going.

According to the manufacturer, it won't interfere with the cycle and won't stress the fish, so I would treat the tank just to be safe. But I have never used this product or had to deal with fish lice, so hopefully someone more experienced will post.

Yes, it's most likely bits of mouldy food. My landlords had the same stuff on their tank.
