can you fill my 55 with fun fish?

For the middle level, how about Rainbows?? Colorful, peaceful, active, reasonable size. I've got a tank full and they are beautiful.

Back of tank: Paint, Printed Background, or leave plain?

I used something called Water Colors Backround. It comes in black or blue, and is available in various sizes. It is basically a decal, and has a nice shimmery look to it. The problem I saw with paint is that I might change my mind later. With the decal type applied backround, I could...

New Lighting + Cold Cathode Moonlight....

That's a great question. I'll take some tonight and post them later. Now the other question I anticipate is how about pics of the various Coralife bulbs on the tank. It's would be a bit of job but I might get around to it. What I really need to do first is buy a decent camera!!

New Lighting + Cold Cathode Moonlight....

Did a little project over the weekend. I have been researching lights for weeks now, trying to decide what type to go with. My tank is a 70 gallon, no live plants. I finally decided to go with 2 coralife fixtures. These are the ones with two 48" T5 28w (not HO) bulbs. I didn't go T5HO or Power...

Put carbon in filter for 1st time.....

Before getting back into the hobby, I read lots of posts on the pros and cons of carbon/charcoal. I decided not to use it, went through a typical cycle, and have had a very healthy, happy aquarium. Water always looks clear, no smell, and perfect readings. Due to a calamity (Kitchen Sponge...

Kitchen Sponge Catastrophe - Need Advice

Good news. Didn't lose anyone over night. The gasping has mostly subsided. Don't know what it's done to the benficial bacteria yet. Maybe the multiple water changes helped. Figured I didn't have much to lose. Not out of the woods yet, but hanging on. I really hope this thread saves someone...

Kitchen Sponge Catastrophe - Need Advice

Fed them some blood worms....almost all ate something...not the usual vigorous feeding, but I was happy to see any feeding at all. Most are also back out swimming a bit, after being huddled up in a mass the past 2 days. Strangely, my two German Blue Rams, which have a reputation as being...

Kitchen Sponge Catastrophe - Need Advice

Latest update. Lost a Praecox Rainbow. The rest are holding steady, not better but not worse. Did another water change. With all the water changes I've done, I'm pretty sure whatever was in there is severly diluted. My fear is that the exposure damaged the fish, and they may not recover. I'm...

Kitchen Sponge Catastrophe - Need Advice

Quick update...2 Millenium Rainbows dead....I think the whole tank is going down. I feel sick. That must be some nasty stuff in that sponge.

Kitchen Sponge Catastrophe - Need Advice

I hope you are right, and it saves someone else from going through this. To be honest, I was embarrassed to even write the post, because in retrospect it seems so idiotic. Imagine the sinking feeling I had when I read the package, and saw "Not for Aquarium Use". One of the sad things is...

Kitchen Sponge Catastrophe - Need Advice

Yes, it's an antibacterial sponge. I had no idea. It was only in the tank for maybe 20 seconds. Apparently that's enough. I hope my mistake can help someone avoid this type of tragedy. I have a strong feeling I am going to lose most of the tank. I'll post an update later.

Kitchen Sponge Catastrophe - Need Advice

I got back into the hobby recently, after a about a 20 year lay off. Everything has been going absolutley great. The set up is a 70 Gallon, two Rena XP3's, 2 Penguin 660r Powerheads, and 2 Rena Smartheaters. The tank cycled right on schedule, and my mostly Rainbow tank has been active and a...

T5 vs. Power Compact for 4' tank?

I set up my 70 gallon about three months ago. Everything is going great, and I have a nice mix of fish, mostly Rainbows. No live plants, but heavily decorated with large rocks and very good quality fake plants. My current lights are very basic T-8 fluorescents. They are the 18" 15W variety...

    Hello, thanks, and tank pics....

It's funny you mention the lighting. My lighting is two simple All-Glass strip lights with 15w flourescent 8000K full spectrum All Glass Aquarium Spectrum bulbs. It wasn't my original choice, but here's what happened. After reading reviews on the web, I actually purchased two Current Satellite...

    Hello, thanks, and tank pics....

I am really glad I got the Rena Smartheaters. They are about a foot long, and attach to the end of the intake tubes. I have just one of the extension tubes attached to the intake, then the Smartheaters. I went this way for three reasons. The first is that it is one less thing hanging in the...

    Hello, thanks, and tank pics....

I haven't had an aquarium running for over 15 years. My wife and kids talked me into it, so I am back at it. The biggest surprise is how much great information is now available on the web. This site and others have been extremely helpful. Thanks to all for the great information. Here's the...
