I may have this problem, should I risk over crowding the tank if it'll save my gold platy stress?

I'd try and cycle it with the snail and some shrimp to be nice to the betta.

=/ It's all my filter came with. Maybe when I setup my 50gal I'll buy a biowheel or HOT filter setup. For now I'll just dread the trouble of digging out the UGF system.

Anyone know where to get a hold of some? or have any readily avaliable?

My UGF uses two carbon catridges (have to change twice a month). It does a great job when coupled with my 20-30gal pump. My water is crystal clear.

When I was about 5 we bred these guys (or something very close, not as colorful). It was really neat. They had fry for about a week and a half and then one day the dad, who had been protecting and cleaning the babies, ate every last one. :'(

The things I've read on gouramis say they prefer to be in groups of three. The dwarf red fire is also a supposedly good community fish (no problems with harassment so far). I'll plan the ecosystem for the 50gal more carefully than my current setup, I really want a balanced healthy tank.
