    New tank,early algea.

You mention 3 tubes. If they are regular flourescents at 40w each, your at about 1.6w/gal. which would be pretty good for a lightly planted tank. 5500k and 6500k lights are about the equivelant of high noon lightling. Think of a pond of water sitting outside in direct noon sunlight. Algae...

    switching tanks

I just moved my fish from a 55g to a new 125g. You should be fine if you move everything (gravel, plants, decor, filters, and the water). It will be like doing a 50 water change. Depending on how much you change during your normal maintenance, your fish shouldn't mind. No matter how careful...

    Can anyone identify this fish?

I just have the one. I really like him. However, you know by watching your fish on a regular basis what normal behavior should be. When it changes, you know something is up. Well, I never see mine unless I look around the back of the tank for him. He's usually behind something in a corner...

    Can anyone identify this fish?

Thanks guys for the input. I was only able to find one place that called them Hillstream Loaches on my own. With your help, I've gotten a lot more info. Loaches.com has quite a bit. Sorry about the pic. It's the best I could do, I was in a hurry because it's the first time I've ever seen...

    Can anyone identify this fish?

I've had him for about 4 months. Bought at Petco and listed as "Borneo Sucker". Can't find any info on him. Would like to check out a caresheet. Most of time he hangs out on the glass in one of the far corners behind a powerhead durning the day and has been seen on the front glass at night...

Quiz, do you know your freshwater aquarium?

50%. And I think this score was luck. Just guessed on most. Knew a couple.

    Fish dying?

Add the airstone and leave it on 24hrs a day. It will not lower your Ph much and if on 24hrs the swings in Ph from day to night will be the same as they are now with no air stone 24hrs a day. You could also use a power head pointed toward the surface (with or without air) to roil the surface...

    Blue Ram questions.

Thanks for the replies guys. So, if I was thinking of say 2 pairs (in the 125g) how would I go about it. Would I bring home more than 4 and observe; when paired off, return the others?

    Blue Ram questions.

I saw some Blue Rams at my LFS and would like to get some. They seem to be a pretty popular fish, and I've done a search on this forum and read alot about them. However, I have a few questions: 1. How many should I get? I don't want any aggression in my tank and I understand that there...

    Fish dying?

My money is on lack of oxygen/co2 poisoning. Fish at the surface gasping is a sign of oxygen deficiancy. Your plants will use oxygen at night when the lights are off. A sign of this is if you always find fish dead in the morning. There is no way, I would keep that many fish without some...

    Clown Loach size

I agree, C. Loaches grow very slow. My LFS has about 20 in a species 100g display only tank. They are all around 16 years old and the largest is a nicely filled out 5 inches. I have seen a 12 inch C. Loach at another FS that was reported to be 40 years old. He was in a 500g with a 4ft...

    Cloudy Water

It could be that the bubble attachment is creating too fine a bubble and this makes the tank water appear cloudy. To fix this, bury the attachment in the substrate. This creates larger bubbles. Also, it could be that when the bubbles reach the surface and pop, they release "micro" bubbles...

    55 gallon tank dimension

Here's another tip to calculate a rough volume quickly: (L X W X H ) / 231 For example, a standard 55 is (48X13X20)/231=54.03. Sorry to break the news Holly, but 48X18X12 is a 45 gallon. Didn't want to be cruel, but you should know for dosing and other reasons. Sorry.

    Big decisions.

I kept one Oscar, 1 Jack D., and 1 Marble Sailfin Pleco in a 55 gallon for 3 years. I started with 3 JDs, but they always fought. It started out that 1 of the 3 was dominant and terrorizing the other two. So I gave him back to the LFS. Then 1 of the 2 left became dominant....he went back to...

How many of you use a log?

Just curious. I use a notebook to write down everything - new arrivals, maintenance, behavior, test results, deaths :(, changes, anything.

I just got a new air pump...

I agree, that if your not overstocked, the filter should provide enough surface agitation to oxygenate the water. I've got an 18 inch bubble bar in the back of my tank for decoration but mainly because my Pleco loves it. I moved him from a 55 to the 125 and set it up just for him. He's always...
