The importance of a good reflector: A photographic Study

Yes, Slappy, that avatar is awesome! I have been wondering whether you made it yourself or where in the world you got an avatar like that!

The importance of a good reflector: A photographic Study

That was a good way to do a comparison. I really could see a difference in many of the full tank shots. I could discern better when I opened two separate pictures and placed the windows with them next to each other to compare. There is no competition between the first two and the last two. The...

    New plants need planning..

Yep....it's real easy. As they get toward the top of the aquarium, they grow much faster (stronger light).

    New plants need planning..

how close can I plant to the heater? I have some plants that touch the heater randomly. I have had many different plants touching my heaters at different spots also. I have never seen any problem occur from it at all. It would probably be prudent to at least give the plant an inch or two...

    New plants need planning..

Your plants should do fine planted next to bogwood, but It really depends on how bright your lights are. If they are barely bright enough for a plant to do well under, and then they get some additional shade, then yes, there may be some problems in that area. Normally, though, as long as the...

20 gallon FOWLR- first marine tank...

I believe I'm ready to start a marine tank after plenty of experience with freshwater. I have had a heavily planted tank running for about a year also, so I understand water quality, overal tank balance (light, fish, nutrients, CO2, etc.) water testing, and adding of chemicals (fertilizers)...

    Plumbers Tape for CO2 systems

If I can remember, I'll try if for ya next weekend at my next water change! I don't expect any results, but I'd rather try it and be proved wrong than be right. That will mean more CO2!!!;)

    Too much light?

Yes, too much! I also don't find VHO bulbs to come in very good color spectrums for freshwater plants to grow under. Are you using 10,000K? Those are about as close as you can get to what freshwater plants need, but still a little too blue. They will work, though. You don't need any more than...

    Plumbers Tape for CO2 systems

JLudwig, The Hagen system he's talking about doesn't use a needle valve. It's the same as a DIY yeast method CO2 system. He's just using the tape to seal the lid to the container (I'm assuming...since that's the only threaded area). Personally, I don't have any problems with my containers...

What New World cichlids do you currently have?

The only New World Cichlid I'm currently keeping is a 7.5" Veija Maculicauda. Great Fish!

    Newly planted tanks and algae

JohnStires: I believe I get about 1 bubble per second, although I don't actually have it set up to count the bubbles. When I say "normal (aged) pH of 7.8", I simply mean that the pH in all my other tanks, as well as tap water that has sat in a shallow container for 24 hours has a pH of 7.8...

    Newly planted tanks and algae

I use two of these systems linked into a single power reactor on my 20 gal tank! I fill the containers with sugar to the "first line", then add 1/4 tsp baking soda and 1/4 tsp of yiest. I hear that the baking soda also adds some CO2 (that's what a few sites say!) Each container lasts for 2...

    salt or no salt

Well, that is definately a STOOPID idea!!! (LOL, had to do it :p ) Seriously, though, if you look at it from the "reality" it's going to probably turn out to be, you really are kidding yourself with that mono, Stoopid. Let's say that in a year or so the fish does indeed start to diminish in...

lava rock or something like it

If it floats, it's Tuffa Rock....also known as Feather Rock around here! It is extremely porous and light, but a bit sharp as well! Lava Rock should sink with little problems, just roll it around to make sure you get all the air bubbles out of it.

    how long to medicate?

I highly suggest against changing too many factors of the water chemistry at one time. If you do raise the temp, then do it slowly. 1-2 degrees per day is good. Do the same when lowering it. Also, I would do some decent sized water changes, too, since this can do more good than anything else...

    how long to medicate?

Thanks for saving that one Famman! It gets pretty tiring writing the same post over and over, especially when they tend to be lengthy! I have tried to shorten my answers, but that post is pretty clear cut, and to the point! I have also, since then, been questioning the effectiveness/necessity of...

    how long to medicate?

Personally, I'd add 1 TBSP aquarium (or table/other) salt to the aquarium per 10 gallons. Even corys, plecos, etc. have seemed to do just fine in this small amount of salt. It really makes a difference in the ich infestation. It causes the fish to shed their slime coat and produce it more...

Crashed filter? Help with medicated tank

I have used QuickCure in the past with success, but I have found that simply adding 1 TBSP Aquarium Salt (table salt is fine), and raising the temp to about 80 degrees is the best method for ich control. Sometimes I'll raise it higher if fish are not to sensitive to higher temps. I do water...

Good food for Primarily Cichlid Tanks, (I know it's cliche..)

I mentioned veggies in mine. I have/do use: Romain Lettuce, Iceberg Lettuce (less desirable than Romain), Cucumber (their favorite!) Squash, Zuccini, Spinach, and have tried peas. I just slice them into wafer form and cut around the peel and add to a veggie clip. I have tried to freeze them for...
