    Alge scrappers?

Odds are, if it doesn't scratch her acrylic tank, it isn't going to scratch the glass. Shouldn't hurt anything.

    Heater Problems...

Dumb question, but is the heater actually heating? Like is the light on? I would suspect heater failure, unless you live in Iowa like me, and are keeping your tank outside.......... :D

time to change water but worried about heater

only off for 25 minutes? When my heater failed in the on position(wouldn't shut off, kept on heating), my fish went for about 20 hours without a heater. It took the tank allmost 10 hours to cool off to 68(the temp of my house). In 25 min. you will not really see a temp drop at all. Actually...

    Automated Self-Maintaning fresh water aquarium

You haven't seen the things that I have seen fail then. Think of it this way.... If something can go wrong, it will.......trust me. It will go wrong at the most inconvient time also. The way that aquabot made it sound, that he wanted it to control pretty much everything.....Not a good idea...

    Irresponsible options at your LFS

Hey now..... I love my bala shark. So much even, that when his buddy died 3 months ago, and my LFS finally had some that were about the same size as him(~4"), I bought them. They are in a 55 gallon for now, but, knowing the adult size, and that it will take him another year or more to get to...

    Automated Self-Maintaning fresh water aquarium

I think that a system like this, would cost in the thousands. Which would mean that the thing will control things like PH, KH, GH, Water changes.... the list goes on and on. Here is my input. Which, is based on truth. If you spent $2K on a maintance system for your fish, you probably have...

    Shrimp Tank! What to do?

Well, the impossible finally happened. My LFS got red cherry shrimp! :p For $1.50! :D Ok.....Now, I need a tank for them. I was thinking of getting a wal-mart special 10 gal. for $30, and adding my small (for a 5 gal.)internal filter, so the external one is not needed. I am also going to...

    questions for starting 55 gal....

My 55 gallon tank stand is furniture. Literally. Picked up a coffe table at a goodwill type store for $5. I could park my truck on it if I wanted to. I did a jump test on it(jumped on it, very hard, and I am not small, there is only 260 lbs of me.......), and no problem. Course, the tank...

    Question about DIY CO2 injection

Ok...It can be done. Me personally, I would get rid of the bio-wheels. Makes it easier to begin with, although, I tend to always do things the hard way. I didn't want to put $150 worth of plant stuff(lights, other stuff, mostly lights) to waste because of a mistake. I understand that he has...

    What is/was your favorite fish?

You mean I have to pick ONE??? Ummm...... :idea2: Duh, my dojo loaches! I love em! They're cute(in a fishy way), and my niece loves watching the "snakes" swim around the tank, playing in the plastic plants, uprooting the plastic plants, rearranging the plastic plants(do you...

    Tetra Heater Killed My Fish!

My AGA one that came with my walmart 29 gallon kit failed in about a year. I cought it when the temp was at 86. Needless to say, the tank was without heat that night. I tried it again(for only a few min) in my 55, and it is stuck. Course, the heater my sister got lasted all of 10 days(It...

what is the ideal ph and temp?

IMHO, the best PH is what your tap water is...... and mine is 8.0-8.2! Unless your trying to breed certain fish, then, and only then, would I play with it, and that would be by lowering/raising the KH by using RO(to lower), or buffers(to raise). As far as temp., depends on the fish. One...

    Good Cichlids for begginer?

Well, I got my rocks in last weekend, set-up the tank, and seeded the filter. Added 1 yellow lab, 2 red zebra, and 1 Melanochromis cyaneorhabdos. No ammonia, or nitrites, and nitrates rose from <5, to ~10. 3 days later, my LFS got in new stock, and I got 4 more yellow labs. They were chased...

    Question about DIY CO2 injection

I am using a bubble wall type diffuser, and I usually see about 15 ppm CO2, It is the Hagen one(I think) with 2 2L bottles attached to it. My filter is a Whisper HOB, and the water line is above the output, so very little surface turbulance. Is that right out of the tap, or aged water...

do mystery snails eat each other? (also shrimp question)

Don't Know about the snails, I could care less if mine fight(I have a gazillion of them). However, the shrimp. I have 2 species in my planted tank, and my betta leaves them alone. Can't say that about the rams though. I don't know.

Update and a couple of questions.??

If your 17 gal. uses any type of filter floss, just remove the filter floss from the 17(just like your adding a new one), and put it in the filter for the 55. If they are different types of filters, you can cut up the old one, and put it in with the new one. On my new tank, I took the 2 floss...

    Good Cichlids for begginer?

I don't think that 63 lbs of sand would work(too much!) The base of the aquarium has a footprint of ~375 sq. in. The base is smaller than most 40ish gal. tanks, as it is ~25" tall. If my LFS was right in that fully covered, 20 lbs would give me 1/2 inch, than 63 lbs would be like 1.5"! For...

    Good Cichlids for begginer?

I have been to the LFS several times, and most of the time, I look at the cichlid tanks. The closest one to me(35 miles) Has 2-4 20 gal tanks of cichlids. I called her today to see if I can get black sand there, and I can(4.50 for a 5 LB bag, which is less than the total price on line), and I...

    Good Cichlids for begginer?

Ok...The title doesn't sound right. I have been keeping fish for a few years now, and have always been intrigued by cichlids. For christmas, my parents gave me a 42 gallon hexagon tank. I am thinking that I may have to keep dwarf cichlids, as from the front to the back, the tank is 22", and...

    WHOOOO-HOOOO I got a New Tank!!

After much looking, and personal deciding, I think I'm going to get a Fluval 304. I am also thinking of adding a smaller air powerer internal foam filter(from http://www.drsfostersmith.com ) Would the 304 be too big, or would the 204 work? Keep in mind, I'm also going to have a foam filter...
