I hear that homes in the UK are not heated as much as in North America, in which case you definitely need a heater.

Also, test the water you are adding for nitrites. I was having trouble getting the nitrites down in my first tank; it turned out my water changes weren't helping because my tapwater has nitrites. Good luck!

I don't know if they feel "lonely" as such, but I have read that goldfish are schooling fish and prefer to have other goldfish to live with.

In my experience, which I'll admit includes only 2 bettas, I have found that they have better colouring and are more active in heated tanks (~80F).

To me, a small container like a vase is more boring than a tank because the betta can't do a whole heck of a lot, he usually ends up just sitting there (in the set-ups I've seen).

It sounds like your betta's happy since he's building a bubblenest. He doesn't need to breed, and as people have said, breeding bettas is a huge responsibility. Don't forget that once the male babies are a certain size, they will each need their own separate home so that they don't fight...
