i smoked the inch per gallon rule too

How often do you test ammonia, nitrite, pH, etc.? How do the fish look? Do they show signs of stress? Is anyone picking on anyone else?

    Help a newbie

Hi FiveIron, I'm sorry for your loss. Use the search link at the top of the page and read everything you can about cycling. Your fish are probably in trouble because of excess ammonia and / or nitrite, a common problem in new set-ups that haven't been cycled. Get ammonia and nitrite...

    6 gallon tank?

Hi Kyle3, I have 2 ADFs, they are adorable, but they also have very bad eyesight and take a long time to find their food (bloodworms). I know some people keep ADFs with bettas but I would be concerned that the bettas would scarf down all the bloodworms before the ADFs found them. There's a...

Wanted: cheap or free used 50 gal (or bigger) with stand in Toronto

My landlords' are keeping their 4 goldfish in a 20 gal. It is driving me nuts. I have taken it upon myself to test their water and do regular changes. I have explained that they need a larger tank, but Mrs. Landlord refuses to get one because she "hates" the fish. (I guess it was Mr. Landlord's...

    6 gallon tank?

I hear that homes in the UK are not heated as much as in North America, in which case you definitely need a heater.

Need Help with High Nitrite Levels

Here's a US site showing how common nitrite and nitrate contamination of drinking water is: http://www.ewg.org/tapwater/contaminants/contaminant.php?contamcode=1038 The limit is supposed to be 10 ppm, but some places have much more than that. :(

If you don't have room for a proper tank, then please don't try keeping fish at work.

    Weird, and scary

I hope your fish is feeling better soon. It must have been stressful for both of you.

Need Help with High Nitrite Levels

Also, test the water you are adding for nitrites. I was having trouble getting the nitrites down in my first tank; it turned out my water changes weren't helping because my tapwater has nitrites. Good luck!

    Goldfish Question

I don't know if they feel "lonely" as such, but I have read that goldfish are schooling fish and prefer to have other goldfish to live with.

    General Betta Care

In my experience, which I'll admit includes only 2 bettas, I have found that they have better colouring and are more active in heated tanks (~80F).

? Instructions for Nutrafin (Hagen) iron test kit?

Hi everyone, The instruction booklet for my iron test kit (Nutrafin/Hagen) has been destroyed by water damage. Could someone kindly post the instructions? Thanks, Rosemary

    bettas in vases?

To me, a small container like a vase is more boring than a tank because the betta can't do a whole heck of a lot, he usually ends up just sitting there (in the set-ups I've seen).

    Betta breeding?

It sounds like your betta's happy since he's building a bubblenest. He doesn't need to breed, and as people have said, breeding bettas is a huge responsibility. Don't forget that once the male babies are a certain size, they will each need their own separate home so that they don't fight...

    5g setup

I find my ADF tank is messier than my betta tanks. The ADFs have poor eyesight and sometimes don't notice their blood worms even when they are literally draped over the frogs' heads. I wouldn't count on them to keep the substrate clean. Also, I can't really tell how big your gravel is. Make...

    Nitrate question

Test the fresh water you are adding with water changes to see if *it* contains nitrates.
