How much do I overdose flourish?

Do you mean micros? Of the people I know that use Flourish as their trace mix, the dose it as recommended on the bottle. Something like 1 mL per 10 gallon or whatever it says. That just do this 3x a week as directed by EI. Once that bottle starts to get low, you might want to order some...

    Filtration advice: 75G and 120G's

    120G XP4 + XP3 120G XP4 + XP2 or buy another XP3 75G Eheim 2217 + XP2 28G HOBs or use the other XP2 if you buy another XP3 That's my recommendation. If I were doing it from scratch, I'd have 2 XP4's on the 120g, but that's way overfiltered.

    UV sterilizer

No overkill, except the bulbs will be more expensive to replace and they'll require more energy.

    UV sterilizer

Not hard to replace, usually pricey. $20-$40 for a new bulb depending on make and model. Check out google to find out what bulb you need and check out ebay for prices on the bulbs.

    UV sterilizer

It's really a personal decision. A good UV filter can be anywhere from $50(used) to $200(new). If you're buying $20+ fish regularly and/or have a tank constantly battling bacteria and green water outbreaks, it may be worth it to you. If you can get a good deal on a UV, I recommend it. I'm glad...

    UV sterilizer

UV's are a worthwhile investment when you starting getting into expensive fish. They are used mostly in saltwater because, well, most of the fish in salt water are expensive. UVs are also nice on planted aquariums because they kill green water.

    UV sterilizer

A 12-15w UV will work for that, but you need to make sure your hitting the proper flow rate. 490 gph will probably bee too fast, but check out the manufacturer's ratings. They will also have recommendations for wattage. All you have to do is follow their ratings.

    DIY water changer

Not a lot of work at all....and when you're dealing with 100g tanks and larger with weekly, semiweekly, or daily water changes.....5g buckets are no way to go. You can put together an Auto WC system in less time than it takes to do ONE 50% WC on a 100g tank using a 5g bucket. I'm putting an...

    DIY Cannister Filter volume?

It'd be easier to build if you build it like the Eheim Classic series, where the intake comes in from the bottom. You may already have an idea of how and the materials you'll use to build your design, but when I think of DIY cannisters, I think of something like the Eheim Classic.

    DIY Cannister Filter volume?

8" PVC, which is too big to use, is rated at like 120 psi burst pressure....never gonna get near that with an aquarium!

    DIY Cannister Filter volume?

1.5 gallons would be plenty for DIY cannister. Eheim 2217 is 6 L, appoximately 1.5 g. From there it just depends on your pump. If I were doing a DIY cannister for a 125g, I'd go like CWO above and put a 600 gph pump on it, probably with a 2-2.5 g filter volume.....or better yet two filters...

    substrate

It depends on you and your scape and what plants you've got planned. HC can grow in 1", swords cannot. 2"-3" is usually good for all plants, but you can put more in if you want it for your scape.

Need suggestions for 54g Corner tank light retrofit/ DIY canopy

My brother has a 54g corner tank that he really loves. After seeing my planted tanks, he wants to turn it into a good low light setup. Therefore, the 18w stock bulb just isn't going to do it. I said, ok, let's try to get you 55-75 watts in there, and then I'll give you some crypts, anubias...

How cold can temps get when shipping plants?

It really depends where they are coming from and/or where they are going. If they could be exposed to freezing or below, better be safe than sorry. Generally, if you ship Priority Mail, they are pretty much always on the go. Meaning, they are either in a truck where the temp won't drop down to...

    72 Gallon Planted Tank Project

In a low light setup you only need to add trace fertilizers. I'd grab a bottle of Seachem Flourish and use that as directs, maybe once a week or every other week. As far as plants, don't rush. Just keep your eye open watching the classifieds, and a good low light package will come up, with...
