    sponge retrofit topfin 30

Your plan sounds fine. Best you can hope for with that filter. I, too, started with a Top Fin filter!

    Thread Like Worms?

Most likely it's just Planaria, which is normal microfauna in a tank. They tend to get more abundant as you get more dissolved solids in your tanks (gravel). I have noticed a major decrease in the numbers I had in my 55 gallon when I changed to sand. Food can't accumulate as easily inside the...

    Flourish potassium

1 capful is 5 mL ;) By the way.....I just dosed my last bit of the stuff......never again!

    Flourish potassium

Don't feel too bad, Starry. I bought some Flourish K also, and I use it on a 20 gallon!!! That's 40mL per week. Needless to say I have already picked up my replacement. My product is called "NoSalt"....not "NuSalt".....same thing though. I hear 1/4 tsp is good for a 20 gallon per week (about...

Plants, onyx sand & PH in a small tank

I know you've been around and I've seen that you know pretty well what you are talking about Famman, so I'm assuming that you just made a mistake. Maybe you meant Tropheus or something? Apistogramma species like soft acid water. You need water well below 7.0 (better below 6.0) to breed them at all!

Tank is sucking the life out of iron!

Yeah, I know it's toxic to have too much. Otherwise I would have dumped in about 3 capfuls to last the 3 days!;) I guess I'm stuck adding Fe daily for now (till I can figure out what's happening). What makes Fe "precipitate" out? (Does this happen in every tank?) Why is mine faster now that...

Tank is sucking the life out of iron!

You will have to explain that a little better for me Wetman. I thought that Flourish and Flourish Iron both used chelated iron? Although I appreciate the advice and idea, I just don't want any more things to have to add to my water to make it balanced. I have heard many, many tanks run fine...

Tank is sucking the life out of iron!

Thanks for the insight, both of you. Tom, if the Iron isn't needed, why does it appear that I'm getting slight greenwater and more algae than normal? I really started noticing it since my last water change (Saturday). Am I possibly adding too much Flourish? I was trying to add 5mL 3x/wk to...

Tank is sucking the life out of iron!

My 20 gallon has 70wpg (2 20w bulbs +2 15w "screw in" powercompacts....all in 5000K or 6500K). I us two Nutrafin CO2 systems with a powerhead and reactor for diffusion) getting 20ppm+. Substrate is 50/50 sand/Flourite Red. I have at least 70% of tank planted and the rest is just growing in. I...

    Getting new lights

I, too, would just go for the 3rd 96w lamp. I also agree with going for a different spectrum bulb. I think worrying about .6wpg is trivial at that depth and light intensity. I don't have this high of light in my tank, so this is just my opinion! I have 3.5w of light (5000K and 6500K) in my 20...

Can a Java Fern live in a Betta Bowl (no flaming please)

I would think that trying to get her to do water changes every other day or twice a week is going to get her frustrated with the hobby and make her end up doing less maintenance (just an opinion). I think she could get by with changing most of the water once a week (75% to 90%). Also, with a...

    Green cory fins

Your Zebra Danios are pretty notable for fin-nipping other fish. You may have a repeating problem of this in the future. Melafix is an all natural, great healing product (uses tea tree oil). Your fish is probably already healing a bit on his own (although slowly) but the Melafix will speed...

    Carbonated water

Also, you should check your CO2 level early morning before the lights come on. This will tell you what your levels "max" at. You don't want it ever going over 30ppm (give or take 2ppm or so). I wouldn't do anything else for now and watch how that recipe rides out it's duration. That "passive...

    Onyx Sand

You understood exactly what 80gJoe and I were saying, Arkylady. The substrate doesn't need to be mixed with anything else for excellent growth potential. Of coarse fertilizing is a separate issue, and I strongly suggest it.

are my africans spawining (pics inside)

This sounds like it could very well be spawning behavior. It's great to watch and find out for yourself what they do. There is nothing in fishkeeping like watching them mate! Oh, that white fish you want ID'd looks like an albino Pseudotropheus Socolofi. I had one about a year ago.....went...

    JD stopped eating

This is one part of JD's that I don't like.....how they suddenly get picky (most of them) around 6" long. Mine did the same thing and also stopped coming out of his cave less and less as he grew past 5". Mine would eat about 2 or 3 times a week, but only frozen or live foods. I tried to starve...

Did I just cook away my beneficial bateria?

Don't sweat the greenwater problem (even if it gets bad) until you get your ammonia and nitrite into check. The green water algae will actually help you convert these to nitrate! After everthing is stabilized, then I'd do a blackout for 3 days or so.

    Onyx Sand

It works very well alone! Your situation is probably the ideal use for Onyx. :)
