Hi All,
If you have not already heard, Drs. Foster & Smith was closed by Petco last month. I did a lot of my on-line equipment purchases there.
Any suggestions from the group of another reliable on-line dealer to shop at?

Hi All
Is there a term or category description for plants that grow attached to driftwood or rocks and do not need to be planted in the substrate?
Plants such as: Java fern, Anubias, African Bolbitis Fern. Could these plants be referred to collectively as “_______” plants?
I was thinking...
Thank you all for your input and support, no it did not seem blunt or rude to me at all. The situation is what it is, and there is always more that I can learn. To me it is just a hobby and they are only fish, as frustrating as it can get,…there is more to life.
DiscusPaul: if a cleaner...
Thank you for your replies.
Here are some photos of the main tank and the sick fish in the QT tank. I don’t think the photos can show much more than what I already described: Emaciated, Knifed Forehead, tail-standing, but still eating. No other external symptoms such as lesions or flashing...
Hi All,
Started keeping discus about a year and a half ago and have been doing well with the advice from this forum EXCEPT for one problem. I have been continually fighting some type of infection or parasite that is slowly killing off my discus one at a time.
I have read through many of the...
Hi All,
For years I had a Quite One 3000 running on my 75gal, and it was great. A few months ago I bought another one but could tell right away it was different. Not just in design, but company owner ship and branding seemed to have changed. Like all products, I don’t think we the consumer...
TEMPERATURE! I think the other water parameters you mentioned are good enough BUT 79F is too cool IMHO, at least 83F preferable 86F or even more.
And yes water changes.
BTW did I mention TEMPERATURE! Discus need it warmer than almost all other tropical fish. Many others species can not...
Sound like Hexamita, a protozoan parasite that many say is always present to some degree, but needs to be continually managed with Discus. Selective bred Discuses are very susceptible to it, part of the tradeofffor generations of breeding for color and beauty.
I treat mine for it with...
YES, that is a problem. Those center braces keep the glass panes from bowing past their safe flexibilityrange. It’s the back panel that will be affected on a bow front more than the front if that center brace fails. I have known of people removing them on different sizes of tanks but it is...
Hi All,
Question: when impellers wear out on a centrifugal pump, is it mechanical wear on the bushing/shaft and blades, or is it that the magnets lose their effectiveness due to cycle time? I ask because I have a quite one 3000 I have been running for six years and recently it has failed to...
What type of washer are you using between the tank and the regulator? IMHO the ridged fiber type that generally come with the tanks are not that great at sealing the connection. They are for welding and such and the tank is usually turned closed when not in use, so no one notices the slight...
Hi All,
Can anyone recommend a brand or type of LED for accenting and viewing fish?
I was recently at LFS and they had the Finnex Monster 2 LED on display. I think it made the fish look stunning! The colors on the fish really popped!
I recently decided, after many years, to switch my 75G...
Anyone successfully growing African bolbitis fern at water temperature around 84f ?
I have some growing great but I am considering raising the temp from 78 to 84ish for a discus tank.
Thanks.
I just did this with both of these fish. I have a planted Anubis tank which I was keeping pike cichlids and large mouth bass. It was going great for a year+ until the bass one day realized he was big enough to eat my SAE (which were pretty good size) then the pike started too. It was amazing...
If you want see some retrofit lighting you can buy in the Seattle area you can go visit "The Fish Store" in the Roosevelt Dist. or "Little Amazon” on Aurora, or “Red Sea Aquariums” on Lake City Way. If you're up in Everett go to “Pet Pouri” or over to “Denny's Pet world” in Kirkland. Have fun!
Thanks guys, I was thinking more about plants affecting other plants, but the comments concerning fish and algae were interesting.
I was asking because I had a great stand of Cabomba furcata in the below tank, beautiful with brilliant color. It was growing well for almost year then...
Anyone have any opinions or insights into Allelochemicals?
From what I briefly understand they are; chemicals produced by plants that inhibit the growth of other plants and algae. These "allelopathic" chemicals may cause mysterious incompatibilities in the aquarium.
One more reason for...
