If you have a column tank(30") a colony forming small Tang cichlid - like Neolamprologous brichardi or some Julidochromix could be a neat display for that.

Often with guppies it isn't a question of whether fry are being produced, but whether they have hiding places to prevent them from being eaten by the adults or other fish.
Feeding is probably the biggest reason, but digging is a natural cichlid behavior in general. Even cichlids that don't guard eggs in a nest may create a depression to use for spawning.

I am thinking about doing some outside containers or at least something in the garage this spring/summer. I am in Northern Virginia.
If the injury is anything more significant that a slightly nipped fin, you want to put the fish in QT. A separate 10 gallon will be great for that.

If cories eat any shrimp, it will be very few and only babies. Cherry shrimp will breed far faster than the cherry shrimp eat them.
I agree them hiding is the most likely option
Water parameters/quality would be a more likely than predation if they didn't survive based on your stock list
