Hagen AquaClear 20 Aquarium Power Filter?

the stages have nothing to do with algae. sponges are mechanical filtration, carbon is chemical filtration (generally considered unnecessary, useful for use after medicating a tank though), and stage 3 is biological, for the nitrate cycling bacteria.

    new filter help?

I only have experience with HOB filters, and I use a aquaclear 50 on my 29. Its probably borderline too little filtration, but aquaclear makes a good line of hob filters, quiet and they use sponge media which I find lasts longer than the more typical floss found in many HOB filters such as...

Hagen AquaClear 20 Aquarium Power Filter?

Not at all true. The aq filters come with a 3 stage basket. The 3 stages included are 1 sponge, 1 carbon pack, and 1 bio pack. I always buy an extra sponge pack (3 included for a couple bucks) and run 2 sponges, and the bio-pack. Ive had my aquaclear 20 for a few years and still run the...

parasite or disease - please help.

From everything I have read and pictures I have found, columnaris appears to be closest to what I am seeing. I am going to go ahead and start treating for columnaris but if anyone has another suggestion I am all ears. The best picture I could found to correlate to what I see is here

parasite or disease - please help.

I considered euthanizing if I cant find a solution but even then I cant be sure there isnt larva or something in the water. I think I have enough spare supplies to quarantine her, I will probably do that asap

parasite or disease - please help.

I have a 29 gallon tank, planted and cycled. It is stocked with 4 corys, 3 red swordtails, and a single female betta. The swordtails were purchased approximately 1 month ago. I recently lost 1 female swordtail. I noticed a slightly raised white bump on her side, poor coloration, and frayed...

    10g lighting question

When I had a 10g with the wal-mart lighting you mentioned above, I had homemade co2 injection and used a mix of aquatic potting clay and pool filter sand. All of my plants had to be trimmed on a weekly basis. I had plants such as java moss, java fern, amazon sword, and some others I can no...

deciding on a light..... what do you think about this one

granny, check other suppliers. The 30" coralife strips are sold elsewhere with the 6700k bulbs as well.

    Upgraded lighting for a 29g

I usually do my shopping at bigals but they dont carry the glass covers. $16 for a class cover at drsfosterandsmith doesn't seem too bad to me, considering it has the hinge and a handle installed already for easy opening to feed. Price is not the primary concern here. If the difference...

    Upgraded lighting for a 29g

Good point, but I cannot find anywhere yet who sells the 30" coralife freshwater as well as the glass top, so the separate shipping would negate some of the cost of the bulb. Drsfosterandsmith has the current usa satellite, and the all-glass top. Ive done the modding thing before, I had a...

    Upgraded lighting for a 29g

Any particular reason the coralife is recommended over the Current USA? Is either one recommended to put directly on top of a glass cover or would the (sold separately) legs be needed? I have seen power compact fixtures overheat, so I want to be sure of what I'm getting into. Uncovered tank is...

    Upgraded lighting for a 29g

I have a 29 gallon tank (30" long) that I am trying to make more suitable for some low-medium light plants. The current light is just the standard fluorescent strip thats rated around 25w, with the standard plastic aquarium cover. Does anyone have a good idea of what products I should look...

    PC lights?

    I retrofitted a strip for a 10g and I was thoroughly unimpressed.

Where can I find a glass lid like you are referring to?

    PC lights?

I recently upgraded from a 10g to a 29g aquarium. I cannot get my plants to do very well on the 18w fluorescent strip light common of a 30" aquarium that is as high as a 29 gallon. I was looking at big al's listing of all-glass power compact strip lights, making 55 watts. Im not sure if I can...

    Some type of algae?

however rosy barbs probably get too large for a 10 gallon tank. What other fish may be good options?

    Some type of algae?

Hi all, hope I picked the correct forum for this type of problem. I have some type of (I assume) algae growing in now both of my 10g tanks. I dont know exactly how to describe it, but here goes. It seems to grow in patches on solid objects in the tank. It consists of green 'shoots' almost...

Snails or Otos. And do i give snails milk ?

Personal experience with my betta, is that healthy snails wont really be noticed. I have some pond snails in the tank, and they are all quite small but the betta ignores them unless I crush one of their shells. I doubt he would mind oto's either but I cant say for sure. My betta lives fine...

I have a MTS. Why doesn't it reproduce?

You could always just say your feeding loaches, if you want a quick simple explaination i suppose. They never really asked much of it at my lfs, i usually got them along with some ghost shrimp so they might have just assumed or they knew a thing or 2 about MTS.

I have a MTS. Why doesn't it reproduce?

I like my MTS a lot. I rarely see any during the day but if i catch them at night with a flashlight I have quite a large crew now. I got probably 8-10 from my LFS. Ive heard they eat the eggs of pond snails and the like, Im almost inclined to believe it because pond snails reproduce very...
