filtering a 46 gallon bowfront tank

I would go with a canister. I think they are easier to maintain and cheaper in the long run. Also I like the way you can hide them.

    Newbie needs help with cycling....

I would agree with cattlegrid_79 as I too always do a fishy cycle, again with much disdain to fellow posters. I've been doing it for over five years and haven't had any reason to do it different. If you do it right you won't lose any of your stock. Chose some hardy fish to cycle with. Also...

Is there a tropic fish similar to a rainbow trout?

someone correct me if I'm wrong but I think brook trout have a higher water condition requirement than do rainbow or brown trout. You are right Caz they don't get as large as the other species do though.

Is there a tropic fish similar to a rainbow trout?

Trout do not need constant spring water. They need cold clean water. Like others have said they can be found in ponds, lakes, and rivers. There was a really great article in aquarium fish magazine a couple of years ago about keeping brook trout in an aquarium. Beautiful fish. I was actually...

Is there a tropic fish similar to a rainbow trout?

Just get a large tank, something over 200 gallons should do the trick, a water chiller (or a cold location like a basement), and get the real thing. I think a trout tank with rocks and driftwood would be neat. I would personally get brook trout they stay smaller and look prettier IMO.

Looking to get a water softener - what to consider for my aquarium?

I agree with anonapersona Cichlids do well in hard water. Otherwise I have always used softened water that uses salt to soften the water with out any problems, some tropical fish like a little salt in the water anyway. For my cichlids I get the water out of a tap that doesn't pass through the...

    Little, "neat" fish?

Killifish are small interesting fish. There is also a lot of info out there about them.

    Moving

I would say use the rubbermaid container and get a battery operated air pump. They sell them at Fleet Farm for minnow buckets if you can't find one other places. A week is a long time but if the temperature is not to extremely hot and you make sure the water stays clean he should be fine. The...

what fish should i get for my 150 gal tank

As far as filtration I would get a canister filter. For stocking depending on the laws of where you live you could try some native species in a tank that size. You can go out and catch them your self for free. I've seen some nice tanks with panfish in them. It may be illegal where you are...

    canister filter verses biowheel filter?

A pump does more than make noise and bubbles. It doesn't add more oxygen to the water through the bubbles but if you use a larger air stone the bubbles rising up improve water circulation and surface agitation which is very beneficial. Canister filters are much better than HOB style filters. IMO.

    Best filter for 100 Gal

For sure get a canister filter. I use a fluval 404 and I'm pleased with it. I think that the HOB type of filters cause more surface agitation thus reducing the amount of CO2 in the tank which is a bad thing for planted tanks. Over the long run a canister filter saves money and time too.

    Auto Feeders?

If you have someone that can look in on them a few times then you can pre measure the food into little containers for them, avoids overfeeding. Otherwise I have no experiance with automatic feeders.

    My Dempesy won't eat feeders

Over the past 5 years of feeding feeder fish I have had no problem with any disease or anything. Buy them from a good place, look at them and don't feed them if they look bad/ill. Some times it takes a little longer for the fish to eat them then others. IMO one of the best parts of owning...

    Cycle Situation

I cycled my 150 gal tank with fish and had no problem. I do a fishy cycle on all my tanks and I have no problems. Anyway I used some cheap fish on my 150 that I knew would be food for the eventual occupants anyway so I wasn't to worried about them. Personally I don't worry to much about...

    Haplochromis babies

I noticed a few months ago that my haplochromas had some eggs in her mouth but she lost them. Now she has some again for over a week and I think she is going to be alright. I hope. Just wondering if there is anything I can do to help her. I don't think there is much I can do but let her take...

    Prices

To me buying driftwood is like buying rocks. Most of the time these things can be found for free at a lake or river. Just my 2 cents.

You can get polyester filter media from your LFS. Be carefull if you get your polyester from other sources such as packaging because they are often time treated with pesticides.
