Help Me Compose my Planted Aquarium

I decided to trim up and regroup most of the plants and rearrange things. I like the idea of surrounding the rock with the lloydiella. I'll add more plants in the future.

Help Me Compose my Planted Aquarium

Hi all, I'm putting together my first planted aquarium and and having difficulty composing a satisfying aqua-scape. I understand that idea of placing tall plants in the background, mid sized plants in the mid-ground and shorter plants that spread more in the foreground. I've tried many...

    Fertilizer and Ammonia

I just added Osmocote Smart Release Plant Food (19-6-12) to my plants about a week ago and I'm now seeing a large ammonia reading (0.5-1ppm) The fish seem to be doing fine but I'm still worried. I tested the ammonia in my tap water and it's pretty much zero. I then took some of my substrate (a...

    Corydoras Agassizi Fungus?

Hi, I just bought 6 cory's recently from a good LFS but after bringing them home and tanking them (going through the normal process of adding them to a tank) and after a few days I realized that one of them had a white film over one eye and a damaged lip. I thought it was a fungal problem so...

    DIY CO2 mess

Mine and most standard CO2 setups, are a bit simpler than that. I have 1 two gallon bottle with the yeast culture capped with a hole cut in the top. 1/8" rubber tubing is fed through that hole so that it sticks into the two gallon bottle about an inch or so. My culture is 2/3's of the way up...

    1st tank! Quick question!

A Botia is the type of fish I was thinking about. Sorry. That might be a good idea.

    1st tank! Quick question!

Yup, I agree. I just never had one long enough I guess :) Ignore my suggestion.

    Cloudiness in the Water

I rinse all my substrates before adding. Even the nutrient rich stuff. Just do it less for Fluorite and such. I haven't used that brand. I think that's probably the product name though.

    1st tank! Quick question!

Wait a week or so, let the habitat normalize, and see how they're all doing. Make sure everything is healthy and that the tank isn't getting overly smelly or anything. If you get 2 more tiger barbs and a clown loach you'll be at capacity for the tank. Make sure you do a good job keeping the...

    1st tank! Quick question!

I sortof agree actually. Tiger barbs are a schooling fish, and they require larger numbers (~5) to prevent any one fish in the "school" to over-aggress another fish. So, in a 10 gallon, probably 5 is a maximum. You might be able to get a clown loach in there. They do best with barbs...

    1st tank! Quick question!

Nice tank! I would go for a couple corydoras. Loaches are nice too. Gouramis. It really depends on what kind of tank you want. Just keep in mind that you don't wanna crowd a 10 gallon. If you do then you'll need to do a lot more to maintain the tank. Barbs are a bit more aggressive than...

Do I Need to Buy an Aquarium Stand?

I like the look of stands with more exterior elements too. I have a couple that way where I built them with fewer 2x4's and did the "plank" think with cheap pieces of pine on the exterior. Very similar to the stands you can get at the store but MUCH cheaper. I wanted a "beefy" looking stand...

Do I Need to Buy an Aquarium Stand?

No problem, good luck! I have a Sketchup file describing the exact dimensions if needed. It was a fun project. Here's an unpainted picture, you can get a better idea of the construction. It took about 5 2x4's and some screws.

75 Gallon Freshwater Tank Setup - Need Help...

I'm sure this is a very exciting time for you. I love starting a new aquarium. I so often just revamp old tanks I have that are empty or leftover tanks from other projects. Good luck on the whole process! The first thing you need to do is decide what the final outcome should be. Whats the...

Do I Need to Buy an Aquarium Stand?

A stand isn't necessary. I think the only real advantages are that it is designed to hold the weight of a fishtank and that they often have a compartment to store things for your tank like net, siphon, water treatments, food, etc. My first tank was a 30 G tall and I had it on a fairly cheaply...

Rough Start to my Planted Aquarium

Here's a tank pic. The plants can be seen in the center. I don't mind the CO2 reactor. I already have it up and running. If it causes problems I'll take it down. I'm going to try some fertilizer spikes. My main concern is keeping cost down so I'll shop around for a good deal. My goal is...
