Need help with sluggish Jack Dempsey... :-(

FYI - I came home from work today and the two JD's were down in the plants hovering side-by-side about an inch apart, so I don't think the healthy one is picking on the sick one.

Need help with sluggish Jack Dempsey... :-(

Well ok I will consider that, but the EBJD's are much less nasty than the regular ones. And I have carefully watched their behavior, and the larger one doesn't bother anyone else in the tank - he even leaves the regular fish alone.

Need help with sluggish Jack Dempsey... :-(

Hi all, I recently picked up a trio of the newish Electric Blue Jack Dempsey, each about 3cm in size. About a week after getting them, one became suddenly ill, and went from active to dead in 24 hours. The LFS was kind enough to give a refund. Now of the remaining two, one is active and...

    red foxtail

I have something in a bucket that was labeled at the LFS as Red Foxtail. It was quite lovely, but got all tangled up with a bout of green hair algae I had, so I put them in a bucket for an algicide bath, and they never made it back to my tank. At the time, it liked my tank, grew rather quickly...

    Test Kit Chemicals and Techniques...?

Hmmm sorry perhaps I could have explained this better... What I was looking for was exact descriptions of the chemicals used, and explanations of the expected reactions. For instance, if I walked into a chemistry lab with a water sample, I would need 1 ml of chemical A, two drops of chemical B...

    Test Kit Chemicals and Techniques...?

Hi all, I think I have asked this before, but I searched for my post and I cannot find it. I would like to learn about the chemistry behind the cheap little water test kits we all buy at the LFS. I would like to know the chemicals and theory behind some of the common tests we use for...

    Pre-Newbie Question

Ok thanks guys; good information. I think CBB's are my favorite SW fish, but if they are that difficult and sensitive, I will stick to watching them on my computer screen saver! :-) Incidentally, Percula's are one of my other favorite fish, so if they are easy, I will consider some of them...

What's a good mail order source for rare/foreign fish...?

Hi guys, I was wondering what's a good mail-order source for rare/foreign fish...? I am looking for three specific species, that are hard to find here: Green Neon Tetra - Paracheirodon Simulans Lambchop Rasbora - Trigonostigma Espei Electric Blue Jack Dempsey - Nandopsis...

    Pre-Newbie Question

Hi all, I am thinking of setting up a SW tank. I have a good background in FW tanks, and I am especially into planted tanks, and all the complicated chemistry that goes with them. My first question is can someone point me to a website for "crossovers" from FW to SW - hopefully something...

    Awesome find at Wal-Mart

Watch out for pond snails on Walmart plants... All you need is one... And then you have 10... And then you have 100... Keep adding zeros... :-) So dip those plants before you put them in your tank!

Where to buy hole saws to drill my tank?

Can anyone suggest a dealer where I can buy hole saws to drill my tank(s)..??? I once saw a set of holes saws for glass on a web site, but I cannot remember where. Don't worry; my tank bottoms are not tempered... :)

How do you know when a tank is a self contained ecosystem?

This reminds me of those Nasa Ecosystem spheres they sell at the science store at the mall. You know what I mean? They are glass spheres about 6" in diameter, completely sealed, and they have a few little red shrimp in them, and some small sprigs of plants. You're supposed to be able to keep...

New denitrifying device... Wow or Worthless...?

Yes. I learned in another forum that AquaMedic has been marketing a sulphur-based denitrator for many years. They also have a carbon-based denitrator that's pretty slick. The reactor has a built-in fitting for an ORP probe. The probe connects to a controller that runs a dosing pump that...

New denitrifying device... Wow or Worthless...?

Yea isn't that insane??? I would never pay that price. If I was going to go for it, I would buy a package of replacement media and build my own reactor.

what fish swims in middle level of water?

Harlequin Rasboras are great schooling middle-swimmers. I have some Lambchop Rasboras and they are great. They are beautiful fish, but hard to find in the shops, so if you see them, grab them - and then send me an email where to find them because I would like a dozen or so more. :-) Here is a...

New denitrifying device... Wow or Worthless...?

I just came across this new "denitrator" product... Good description and available for purchase here: http://www.marinedepot.com/aquarium_filters_korallin_biodenitrator.asp?ast=&key= Manufacturer's web page here; less description, but more pictures: http://www.korallin.com/s1501eng.html...

Protein Skimmer in a Planted Tank?

Thanks guys. Hmmmm I think I smell a little experiment coming... I should take the waste water from one of my water changes, put it in a clean 5 gallon tank, give it one dose of ferts, run a PS on it, and do a full run of water tests before, and then at intervals after starting the PS...

Protein Skimmer in a Planted Tank?

I once read an article where a guy had a protein skimmer on a freshwater tank, and he felt it worked well to remove "the most hideous and foul smelling gunk [he] had ever smelled" from the water. I was wondering if anyone else has ever used a PS on a FW tank? Did you find it helped with water...
