That depends on the type of tetra. Here in MD, my buddy brings his adult buenos aires tetras outside in early march. He brings them back in with many juveniles in late october (sometimes early november). He usually has 20-30 young each year.

I wonder if running the heat cable during the emersion period would cook the plant roots with so little water?

Not to send you to another forum bht check out www.plantedtank.net. There are many threads on this topic. Cycling with soil is not the same as cycling a tank with just plants and gravel. Plantedtank should be a great resource for you.

The prices can't be beat. If you're building a rack or fishroom, this is a great start. Even if you only want one tank, it is easy to shop for the add ons elsewhere and save $$$.
