    How's it look? Honest opinions

First, I think how you arrange the tank should be focussed satisfying two objectives. 1) a good home for the fish, and 2) to please the one that takes care of it. That said, my personal bias is to arrange the rocks into more of a clustered structure, probably with more of them, all running the...

    Questions About Lighting...

I'm sold on LEDs for several reasons. One of the coolest features is that they can dim so you can simulate sunrise and sunset conditions. You have to be careful which one you get as you tend to get what you pay for. My research has been pointing me towards these...

    Farlowella (load warning)

Try 3 at this post!!! Darn server! I love Farlowellas! Kept them many times over the years. Since Aquarium Glaser recently realeased some Peruvian Farlowella oxyrryncha into the market, you could have one of these rarities! I just can't find a good guide to all the many species of these twig...

    Your best fishing experience?

The most memorable has to be the time a ring-billed gull grabbed my rapala as I cast it. What a ruckus bringing down a gull all tangled up in my line, and then trying to cut it loose! Also a fond memory of my dad catching a state-record tiger musky and we didn't even have a net in the boat!

Beautiful colorful fish for hard water aquarium?

Darn server problem keeps eating my posts! I'm with Misa. If you want plants, go with the bows: Glosseopsis incisus, Melanotaenia lacustris, Melanotaenia boesemani. If plants aren't your thing, go with the Africans.

The new images make it clear. These are Melanotaenia splendida inornata, the Chequered Rainbowfish. They are a stream dweller from the northern reaches of Australia.

    Cave creation suggestions.

I tend to never do an aquarium with just driftwood; I normally have some large rocky areas as well. If you're doing one without the rocks, then with large pieces of driftwood, you could always drill out some large openings. Something I used to do in the past was use pieces of acrylic as...

    Fish ID Help

My first guess is Melanotaenia fluviatilis (murray river rainbowfish), but the quality of the picture makes it hard to be certain. It could be one of the many local varieties of Melanotaenia splendida.

How do I take not-rotten photos of my tank?

A few pointers: set your camera to 'macro' turn off room lights use a black cloth to cut down glare put your lens right to the glass, if you can use off-camera flash if you can practice and experiment!

Welcome to AC....Fire eels are fun, but they get large so you need a good sized tank so they have some swimming room. I'd say a 55 min -- smaller is just not enough room for them to actually swim about once they get big. When I last had one (he had to be donated to a local shop when I moved...

HELP!!! How to save a fishtank!

Unfortunately, I can relate. I don't like being inactive and the pain was awful. I finally worked out a combo of the drugs that allowed me to sleep through life for about a week. That was 3 years ago now. I'm doing pretty well, all things considered. At least I didn't do anything to the...

    Clown Loaches: HELP!!!!!

I am suspecting the issue is with acclimation. Clowns can be succeptible to transfer shock, usually an osmotic pressure issue. You need to take some significant time acclimating them by slowly adding your tank water to the water they came in until you've diluted out the original water at least...

HELP!!! How to save a fishtank!

Yeah, one wrong step for Doug, one (or two?) new Mercedes for the bone doc! The doc took one look at the X-ray and told me it was bad (ER doc had let me believe it wasn't bad). The night after surgery was AWFUL -- they couldn't give me enough morphine! When I finally got the drugs working...
