    penguin/emperor filters

First of all, enter the keywords of your question and do a search. You will have more info than you can use at your fingertips. I've used a Marineland Emperor 400 for over a year and it has performed flawlessly. I'm puzzled by previous comments concerning difficulty in cleaning the...

Need Help with High Nitrite Levels

Don't come to Iowa if you're trying to avoid nitrates in the tap water. Some times of the year it can go well above 10ppm. I haven't added nitrates to my planted tank for months.

how long should java be tied down?

I recently attached a java fern plantlet to a large driftwood piece by weighing it down with one of those lead strips that come with bunched plants. I just set it down on top of the trailing roots from the rhizome and they attached to the the branch in less than two weeks. Worked like a charm.

    Best place to buy Lights

Just a matter of time before that side hanging off the stand breaks from a stress riser. It'll be when not if. Save yourself from a big clean up, $$$ for a new tank, and dead fish and find a base that supports the entire footprint of your tank.

    Where do you buy lights?

Ditto! :thm: I bought two retrofit kits from them for my stock TopFin hoods last year. Their customer service before and after the sale was excellent. Their products are top notch as well. Check em out.

is this the BEST filter setup possible for 50-75g tank?

Tank size is just one important parameter in choosing the best filter option. What kind of tank do you plan on? Fish: species, number, etc. Planted vs. non-planted. Substrate type Frequency of PWC and cleaning you intend to do. As stated previously, your references to 2-3 Emperor...

    Snails??

Thanks...I just learned something new. Sounds like an excellent choice for clean-up duties.

    Snails??

The first question that needs answered is why do you want snails in the first place? If you have live plants then you will want a species that does not eat plants. In my planted 55 gal. tank I have plenty of MTS (Malaysian Trumpet Snails) and common pond snails. They do an excellent job of...

    Filter Options for 75 Gallon

Well said! I love my Emperor 400. It's been in use for well over a year on my planted 55 gal. and works flawlessly. In regards to media choices, you can basically use anything you prefer as long as it will fit in the two extra media bays. I use fine filter padding to filter out fine...

Cloudy/Green Tank...Not sure what to do????

I had a terrible time with green water when I started my 55 gal. planted tank last year. I had three episodes and was ready to try an UV sterlizer. After reading this forum, I decided to try the blackout option. I opted for a 96 hour blackout period which worked perfectly each time. The only...

    Trumpuet snail mixing it up

No...they're most likely eating algae. I have a 55 gal. planted tank full of them and they have never harmed a single plant. At night they come out and go to work on any algae that has grown on the leaves but leave the plant along. I love them...they can stay as long as they like.

Is a Bio-Wheel Marineland 150 too much for my 20 gal?

I have been using a Penguin 150B on my 20 gal. long tank for close to a year now and it's been silent. I do make sure I fill the tank comletely up to the brim and the flow from the bio-wheel comes out right at the water level with no splashing....just a few gentle ripples is all. The current...

    Thoughts on filters you own.

Emperor 400 which has been used on my 55 gal. planted tank for a year now. It's worked perfectly with no problems. Operation is quiet and the main noise is from the water flowing over the twin bio-wheels....which I enjoy. I inadvertenly sucked a strand of hornwort through the impeller during...

    heater's with indicator lights???

I have used Tronic heaters in my three tanks for years with trouble-free service. Tronics have a red LED light that goes on when the heater is heating. Don't skimp on price when buying a heater. If it gets stuck on or off you could lose all of your fish. * Do a search on this forum...

    bio wheel ?

I'll add to my previous comments regarding noise. I too have found my Emperor to run VERY quietly. Water splashing is the main noise...and I like that sound. Regarding filter cartidges....I power clean mine each week with a shower massage type shower head. It removes all the gunk and does...

    bio wheel ?

I've used an Emperor 400 with my 55 gal. planted tank for a year with excellent results. My recommendation would be not to go below this capacity. That being said, you'll get lot's of opinions and many of them will probably be right too. More filtration is usually never a problem unless it...
