Since they are pencilfish, then I'm assuming that you'll need soft, acidic water and excellent water quality. Not much else I know of, sorry.:D

Look around at your aquatic store. They should have some spare parts for products. Or ask where the person that gave the filter to you got it. There must be some parts at that store as well.
