If the color gets too much use about 2 tbs of carbon in a cheap box / corner filter and it will clear the tint.
When you say South American are you looking at cichlids or smaller fish?
Canister filters work well but you have to keep an eye on them for blockage issues. I'd suggest going to Aquabid and getting a used canister filter. I have three and paid less combined total than any one of them would cost new. I also highly suggest also using a large sponge filter as there is...
One leaf will get gravel substrate seeded for a year. I put them in some tanks, grow out tanks for crayfish or shrimp, about once a month. You can use more but keep it limited until you're used to working with them.
Forgot to say drift wood works great as well. I collect and cure my own...
I seed each tank with a dried Oak leaf once per year. It lets off tannis and creates a microb bed for good bacteria to grow. Peat moss is a mess and will turn the tank brown. If you use it place it in a container with small holes punched in the lid to allow water flow but not allow peat to...
I breed Bettas off and on so when I move a lot of my fish outside the Bettas get set up for breeding. The moquito larva get the breeders conditioned very rapidly. Even with just one Betta, by harvesting and freezing mosquito larva 3-4 times you have enough to last all year for most people. As...
I just leave them there and you know what happens if you don't use enough! Here is a trick, using an empty plastic coffee 2/3 way full of water from outside and net up as a bunch of larva. Put them in the fridge and the temp will slow their growth down to a cral. The will not mature for 3-4...
I can appreciate your experince, but as stated above the bigger the cichlids get the more the largest clain territory. The JD and GT will escolate and the smaller cichlids will pay for the aggression. I could be wrong, but I'd observe like a hawk.

Thanks OinionGirl. Sorry about the native fish thread getting heated. I certainly always try to allow others to share their opinion without being too critical. It is fine to disagree, but it can be done politely.
Well we are getting a little testy so please play nice.
I understand the dangers inherent, but would never gamble with nature. The Rusty Crayfish is a good example of a non-native killing off the local species. In Great Britain Clarkii Crayfish have almost forced the natives into extinction...
