So...I've had a murderer in my tank so to speak...I'm thinking tonight while watching them it could be my male auratus. I just read that they can be very agressive to other males, but I don't have any other male Melanochromis in my tank. Are they just agressive period?
Curious what you are using for an algae eater if anything? Some stores say plecos and some say snails. And the same stores say oh don't get a snail...cichlids will eat them or visa versa.
Anyone had any luck adding either of these types? I read that corydoras will most likely be eaten by...
So, I finally found some information on the difference between a pseudotropheus johanni and the pseudotropheus cyaneorhabdos...
The latter are all the same color from being born, which is blue and black horizontal stripe. They say not to keep them in the same tank as the johannii's because they...
It's as close to 0 as it gets...I've had the tank for a while and it never seems to get as yellow as the test strip. I think it may just be my water!
I just have had some opinionated people telling me what I should do. I decided that this is a hobby for me and I'm just starting, so obviously...
About an inch and a half. It's for sure getting bigger quick! I change my water about every week or 10 days. Parameters last night
Ammonia somewhere between 0ppm and .25ppm
Nitrites 0ppm
Nitrates 40ppm
PH is 8.2
I have sand substrate and holy rock with lots of hiding places.
I am going to try...
I have 2 pseudotropheus johanni in my 55 gal. I thought that I had a male and a female. The yellow one I was told from the fish store owner was a male. Then I found out it was probably a female, even though she has 2 egg spots.
Anyways, she has turned from yellow to sort of a brownish color. I...
I have heard that having the lights on all the time sometimes bring out (extra) aggression in the cichlids. I did a bit of research on lighting because I would like to have the proper lighting. I am hoping to bring out the colors in them, as well as hoping to keep it as peaceful (as possible)...
Alrighty...After a long time of cycling and water changes and holding my breath my 4 fish are still alive and I have some sort of algae growth! I think it's cycled, but I still don't have the ammonia down to 0. Not sure how i'm gonna get it there! It's between .5 and .25
Im not sure if I got the albino species right.. The store called them Albino Red Top Zebras, but I'm having a heck of a time figuring out if it's just the albino form of the metriaclima pyrsonotos or something different completely.
So my PH is 8.2
Ammonia is 0.25
Nitrite is 0
Nitrate is between 5.0 and 0
I have a fluval filter with biomax and I know that's a good way to get the tank started as well.
I know my ammonia should be 0 but I did just add 4 fish yesterday?
Not sure what the nitrate amount is about?
Wait until...
Our tank is used and he gave us the filter to go with it including some gross looking filters to help get the new tank cycled quicker. I waited a week or so and took the water in after it was clear and the store said it was good. I do plan on getting a test kit for sure.
What made you think...
Love your choice of words freshyfresh...I think i'm in WAY over my head! I got my water tested at a very reputable aquarium store that said it was good. I am feeling like maybe I should have added more fish at a time than just 4.
I am going to pick up a test kit today because i'm not going to be...
Well shoot!! I wanted as peaceful a cichlid tank I could get. The info I read on each said maybe the albino red fin zebras were mildly aggressive and the bumblebees aggressive...
I was going to add some Labidochromis Caeruleus Nkhata Bay and some Lodotropheus Sprengerae, but I think those are...
So I've done a lot of research, but there's not a lot of advice out there about how often I should be getting new fish to get my tank "overstocked."
I bought 4 fish to start with today.
2 Albino Metraclima Pyrsonotos
2 Pseudotropheus Crabro
One calculator tells me to get 27 fish because my...
I have a definite limited supply as I am in Canada and in a small city. I bit the bullet today. Just got 2 Albino Metriaclima Pyrsonotos (Albino Red Fin Zebra) and 2 Pseudotropheus Crabro (Bumblebee).
They are pretty hardcore checking each other out... How soon until I add more!!?!?!?! I'm...
Alrighty...
I am a complete first timer for cichlids. Always have wanted to do them but have always not had a big enough tank. Finally bit the bullet and bought a 55 gallon, which I know is the smallest tank possible but that's what it is for now.
I have been doing a TON of reading on cichlids...
