I have this same tank "on sale and dirt cheap" I was able to spend a little more on canister filters.
Also using a penguin 200 HOB as well, I have 2 large sponge filters in the back corner

Just my opinion but if you can.... get a bigger tank!
55 gallon bare minimum....
Remember they will get bigger.
If you are planning for a 40. why not just plan for a 55 or however larger you are able to go.
Size advantage plays a role too. I have had breeding yellow labs terrorize my most aggressive mbunas. For me peacocks should have size advantage. My new tank will be a mixed tank of peacocks and mbunas and can be done.
Btw, just my opinion but the peacocks should be in the tank first and build...
