This is because the lid resonates the sound of the filter. Its exactly the same even on Aquaclears. You can hear the hum of the motor much more with the lid on than off HTH

you mean THIS ONE? If thats the plant that came in a gel it will die. Those plants in a tube are just a bunch of bull crap. I wasted 9$ for 2 tubes and later discovered that all these Tubes contain non aquatic plants :(

AC all the way I also voted for the AC due to its cannister-ish versatility and its super reliability. I use 2 AC minis in my 12g one with sponges and the other with bioballs. Works great!
