It sounds like you are going through a recycle as some died in your filter. Just don't let the levels get high and follow the fishy cycling procedures.

I always get a reading of 1.0 ammonia after using prime on my tap water. It could be a false reading. Try testing straight out of the tap with some prime to see if it causes the false reading.
