    fresh sea water

It also depends on where you are getting it from. I have a 400 gallon semi reef that runs solely on raw sea water that is taken 20ft off shore. Granted, we are fairly free of polution here but it still does exist. BTW, I have had absolutely no external filtration on this tank for about 8...

    Light Suggestion For a Coral

Bummer, I wonder if they have changed something in the formula then. I would also have to say the same thing then if it only took an hour for that to happen.

Have you seen this coral before?

Aloha Sally, :) No, really though, it is hard to tell on some of them. Most of the Fungia have a well pronounced "mouth" in the center but there a few such as F. valida that are not as well pronounced. The ridge lines also tend to be more symetrical to the center on fungia rather than...

A question in regards to reef current!

In regards to reef current, 10 times the tank capacity turn over per hour is a good rule of thumb. That also depends on the species. A good idea is to point your powerheads towards the surface which is where the majority of O2 exchange will occure. The more suface agitation that you can get...

Have you seen this coral before?

:) Yah, I thought I would pop by and see what is going on at the ol AC. I haven't been here for quite awhile. I saw a couple of threads here that I couldn't resist posting to so I did. Did you go by the same name back then? When I was stopped by a couple years back I saw that someone else...

    Moorish Idol

Amphiprion pretty much sums it all up good IMO. It is very rare to see a morish idol live more than 6 months without an abundant supply of sgonge. No matter what the pet shops say, you just cant duplicte thier diet well enough. I find the majority of these in slow water, harbor areas where...

    Light Suggestion For a Coral

Ace, it may not have been the Chemi-clean that did the corals in but more perhaps the aftermath of what it does. I have used this product for years with great success. You do have to do a heavy cleaning right after you use it.

Have you seen this coral before?

Exactly, They inflate and can manipulate the flesh on the underside to move. It is not uncommon to see this species move 10 feet in a day. I typically find these at about 25 feet deep. Dont worry about having them close to the light as lighting is not as important as it would be to most SPS...

Have you seen this coral before?

Halomitra, possibly H. pileus. Still part of the family Fungiidae. Fungia typically has a single opening in the center. These corals do like to move around so take caution as to where you have it sitting.

    Aloha

Hey Cheech, Howzit? Nice to see a few ol faces hangin around. I have to hang around now. I started a debate in the marine section hahahaha Hey, did you see who else popped in? Almost on the same day even. Yes Mono, I am talking about you dear. :D

    soft coral ID please?

Possibly stereosoma sp. I was thinking Anthelia at first as well. either way they are both part of the Xeniidae family.

    so fed up figuring sump

An overflow box is actually quite simple to build. Do you want to skim off of the surface of your tank or does that matter? If not, go toyur local pet shop. They use to use a plastic box that would hang on the front of the tank when they catch fish for you to take home. They would put the...

    aptasia problem

Kalk injections will also work without any effects on the tank.

A debatable thread on water turnover

BTW, I wanted to touch on a point that OgremkV made in relation to gas exchange. "Turbulent flow would affect the surface chemistry (gas exchange) more than laminar flow. I've seen pump setups with a 50x turnover rate, yet the surface was effectively unmoving".Very valid point and part of...

A debatable thread on water turnover

Good points on all. I did mention that there are outside veriables to be concidered on the subject of flow but I dont want to stray to far into those realms on this thread. The basis of this thread is to get opinions on flow rates and turnover rates in accordance to pump design. Amphiprion...

    can copersafe ruin the tank?

If the tank is glass, the copper will adhere to the silicone. If it is a plex tank, the copper will get into the scratches. Bleach will not do anything for copper as it is a heavy metal and not an organic. I have used them in the past without any problems but you have to scrub the tank out...

    Discus in peril

Bummer, Watch the other fish for any signs and think about treating them just in case.

    Discus in peril

More than likely it is a bacterial infection from what I see. The swim bladder issue is in general a secondary thing. The other bummer is once they start the head standing, they usually don't come out of that one. How long have you had these fish and did you treat them at all when you got...

A debatable thread on water turnover

Excuzzzeme, The 30X for a 100g tank was a simple referance number and not to be taken as an actual occurance. "Air pumps and air intake pressure pumps in themselves do not create a higher O2 rate." Exactly, and this was something that I wanted to point out but did not want to extend the...
