    Hmmm.....

As for your question about it always being this way, no. I think this will be the 5th or 6th change in format since i've been around.

    Finnex Planted 24/7

I can't seem to find the article I read, but what doug said is the general idea. If I recall from my reading at 18" the PAR levels were about medium. There are some plants that will carpet under medium light with CO2 if you look around. I dont think something like DHG would work, but perhaps...

How to cheaply take care of these plants?

Most of those should do well under lower light without CO2. I would recommend getting some flourish liquid ferts at least until you stock the tank with enough fish to provide nutrients. Watts per gallon is an outdated measurement. It was a good standard when all lamps were equal, but there are...

    Plant advice needed

Buce is short for bucephalandra. It's a rhizome plant like anubias. Some of the common varieties are easy to find. The super colorful ones might take some searching, and may cost some more cash. They can be planted in the substrate, but do better tied or glued to a rock or wood. Obviously...

    Plant advice needed

I've found hairgrass difficult without CO2. it may grow, but not well, and will not carpet as much. L. aromatica gets nice reds on the underside. You will have to trim it from time to time, but not as much as some other stem plants. Buce is cool and has some good colors. DIY CO2 isnt too...

    New nano freshwater

Never tried them myself, but hear great things about the larger sunsun canisters. Cheap and reliable. just have to watch out because cheap means they can easily break is handled roughly. They make small ones, but ive not heard anything about them yet http://www.ebay.com/itm/like/261521833320

    Am I crazy??

When I got my 55 used the nitrates were off the charts. I planned on rehoming the hodge podge of cichlids, but wanted to get them into better conditions first. I took home as much of the water as I could carry, and started slowly cutting it down through increasing sized water changes daily. I...

    LEDs for a planted tank

I know you want more experience, but from what I hear the P+24/7 fixtures are great. You leave them on 24/7 and they simulate daylight cycles. They are not overly bright, but have a good PAR rating because they are plant specific spectrums.

    Help with plants?

Generally, DHG needs very high light, and/or CO2 to do well. Ive seen it survive without that, but not thrive. With the anubias, the rhizome is the big part where the roots and stems come off of. It needs to be out of the substrate. Preferably, you should tie or glue it to a rock or piece of...

Where oh where has everyone gone

I was out for a while, but my wife knew I missed it. she found someone giving away a 10g for free and brought it home for me. now I'm back up to a respectable 4 tanks. I have 2 more in planning, but will probably wait until we move in a year or 2. I doubt either of them will stay away forever.

The 150: a work in progress.

I don't mind tannins, but to each their own. Otherwise looks good. Pretty sure I can ship a flat rate box for about $6, but might be better to wait for warmer weather (you are back east correct?). If you are still interested come spring, I'll have a bunch of rotalla. Just did a trim again and...

    Equipment for 55 and 170

I had another thought, sunsun is a cheap canister filter. It's basically a Chinese knock off of one of the major brands. I've heard mixed reviews on them. A friend of mine has one on his SW tank and it's been going strong for 5 years. Worth looking into at least if the budget is a concern. Some...

    Question about gravel

The only problem I have with the black diamond is it shows any little bit of debris, and its not very easy to siphon without sucking up a bunch of sand. A real pain when my angel fish decide to rip up the moss. Otherwise, it looks great and is cheap. Great for live plants, and if you are not...

    Equipment for 55 and 170

+1 on the 2 heater idea. I always run 2 if I can for the same reasons. www.jehmco.com has good prices for ebo heaters, check for sales. I don't see the problem with a HOB for a 55g (or better 2), but a canister is cleaner looking. In the bigger tank, dual canisters give tons of flow options...

    sand depth

Play sand is a bit coarser I think, but I do use a bucket. I just pour it over the top of the log. In a 10g, if it was an issue you could use a small pitcher, but I could see that being more tedious in the case of a 29. I would still recommend water changes to replace trace minerals the plants...
