I believe they are the pimelodus, they aren't the four lined ones for sure. From what i've read on them say they can grow to somewhere between 6 and 10 inches, there seems to be some disagreement on that. My guess would be that it just depends on the fish and there could maybe be a few...

You could get a piece of PVC pipe cut long enough to reach the bottom of you aquarium, place it in and drop the food to the bottom through it. The platies may not know it's there if they can't see it falling...You could also feed through it first, then feed the platies so while they're busy...
