Shoaling: species number, behaviors, and science

Wow, interesting topic and cool of you to stay up late and help out your friends. I have a school of 4-5 inches SD's regular silver dollars and they would shoal together from time to time but disband once in a while. My big 9 inches oscar would reign around the tank and before you know it, the...

    Vegetable Filtration, Ever Try It

Wish there was an aquarium brand that sells pure organic fish food out there.. would be pretty awesome; all we got are some cheap fillers and some that have wheat and gluten, artificial colors, etc that are in flakes and pellets.. in my opinion which isn't really healthy. Anyway graphicgr8, so...

Does anybody want to share their experience with temperature fluctuation?

I get tank temp fluctuations all the time. Especially like this time of year. In my opinion it's pretty annoying when it gets hot, because then some of my fish would get all stressed out.. like my bows, they are not tolerant of high temps.. I provide a fan and then there's a fast water...

    Vegetable Filtration, Ever Try It

For me, sounds crazy but I've attempted herbs on my 250 gallon installed with hydroponics on top before. Grew a little, but it didn't work out though, because not enough light was getting through the windows, and I think a lot of potassium, some trace nutrients was missing from fish crud.. so...

What was the last thing you bought?

    Cucumbers.

    Calcium buildup removal?

Yep, vinegar works pretty well. I recommend using the cheap distilled ones. Those are good enough. To prevent calcium deposits in the tank, just make sure you top the tank off a lot.. make sure to refill the tank when there's a lot of evaporation and also checking the water level doesn't get...

    Amano has died

Great man.. inspired a lot of people into nature aquariums such as myself. One of the best at aquascaping. He passed away too soon.. RIP, Takashi!

    New 55g Stocking Ideas

Sounds like a pretty good stock to me! Make you have plenty of plants in the tank.. you don't want the GBR's going at it when they see each other.. they are pretty territorial. Make sure all of them get plenty to eat. Sometimes blue rams eat on the center and bottom of the tank, so make sure...

    baby jag is black....

He may just be stressed out a little.. when did you get him? Recently? What are your water parameters? Is your tank cycled, by the way? Check your ammonia, nitrite, and nitrate levels using a liquid drop test kit. I recommend API's freshwater master test kit. Works really well, IME.

Wow, nice recommendation, Slappy. Never heard of that product before. Looks like that would work as well. Awesome.

Smoky tanks? Using tobacco products, incense and candles around tanks

Interesting info. I was also curious to know if cigarette smoke affects aquariums. Thanks. ;)

do clowns need snails to be happy?

Yeah ahah I've heard that several times. Pretty cool. By the way, nice pictures, Duckie. I haven't really given my clown loaches any snails mainly because, like you, I'm afraid I might get them sick.. snails can harbor camallanus worms and other crud..so yeah.. these camallanus guys are...

    An Annoying Problem with Cyanobacteria

For me, it's fifty gallons per tablespoon. Works well. What you do is you mix it really well in a container with several cups of clean filtered water, and let the particles settle down completely.. which takes several minutes. But I usually like to wait for about thirty minutes. Then you would...

    An Annoying Problem with Cyanobacteria

I think what you can do to avoid the cycle being wiped out and annihilated is to place the filter somewhere else temporarily. Just use a water pump to make sure there is water movement in the tank, so the antibiotic can get around inside the tank. Is there currently fish in the tank? If you do...

My tank is measuring high everything!

Well, that's strange.. well, I don't know what say... Just keep being diligent with the water changes until both ammonia and nitrite both drop to 0ppm.. ignore nitrate for now. Important thing is to keep the ammonia and nitrite at low levels so the fish don't get poisoned and lethargic. Within...

My tank is measuring high everything!

Hmm.. nitrates could be coming from your tap water. Have you tested your tap water itself?

My tank is measuring high everything!

It's going to take a while until the cycle is complete. About a month or a little longer. Just keep up with the water changes making sure ammonia hovers around 0.25-0.50 ppm. Any higher than 0.50 ppm, then do a water change to get it down. And below 1ppm for nitrite.. Gotta keep it nice and low...
