    AqAdvisor Webpage

Aquadvisor is a great guide and a good place to start for new fish keepers, but is by no means the authority on what you can and can't do when keeping fish. I personally know that a school of Giant Danios can live with a green terror, an Oscar and a Jack Dempsey. Also, feeder goldfish will live...

How to match temps when doing large water changes?

Not that you need any more input, but this is what I do: * Buy sink to garden hose adapter * Run Hot water only on facet so it is as hot as it will get. This ensures the water doesn't get hotter than I intended. * Turn down Hot water and turn on Cold water, and get as close to tank temp as I can...

NLS cichlids formula vs medium fish formula?

Well I'm getting close to stocking the African cichlids tank I'm starting, but I'm having a hard time finding the cichlids formula at my local fish stores. Seems everyone just carries the small, medium, large formulas. I used to use the cichlids formula years ago and loved it. I guess my...

Any cichlids for my new 36 gallon?

Yeah, you really need to figure out what kind of cichlids you are interested in. You could get away with a 1m/3f yellow labs or saulosi, if the africans intrest you. Otherwise, probably stick to the rams, kribs, shelldwellers, etc. as was mentioned.

20L stocking list + heater Question

20L stocking list + heater Question

So here is my final stocking list, I think... for the 20L in my office. The only possible problem, which I anticipated, is the Ram with the Shrimp. I will be adding the Ram absolutely last, and it will be a juivenile. So, hopefully he will grow up being well fed and not see the shrimp as food...

Need some advice for my upcoming tank

Matten filter, or the HOB will actually have less equipment than a canister. Otherwise a drilled tank with an overflow to hide everything...

    Cichlid babys

That depends. Do you want to keep and raise the babies? I had an african tank that actively bred on a regular basis, but I wasn't interested, or had the room to raise fry, so I didn't do anything. I think I had 1 or 2 survive and grow up in my tank over the years, but otherwise the rest of the...

How much bio filter is too much?

Haha, I see you combined responses from your other thread to this one, threw me for a loop for a second. One question I have about the system, why the open top? If you have any DIY abilities, with a screw driver and some wire strippers you could add a top to your top and install a lot more...

Newsflash: Wife ASKED for a fish tank! Man in hospital being treated for shock

How about a 5 gallon kit with a HOB filter? You can lower the water level for more noise, or find a way to raise the filter? Actually, it probably wouldn't be hard to raise the filter so the water has a longer fall to the tank. Heck, if you were really ambitious and good at making things, I bet...

How much bio filter is too much?

I think the ratios you refer to defer from the home aquarium in a couple of ways. From what I've ascertained from my research, those ratios are due to the balance needed to run an aquaponics system. They are relying entirely on fish to feed the plants, and the plants to consume nitrates, as...

DIY Biotope w/ tons of plants & a living wall and potential for disaster!

I have never heard that nitrate bacteria could not live in freshwater, and I have seen multiple cases of people implementing DSB in freshwater. They do however, need low oxygen levels, hence the DSB, plenum, and denitrafyers.

DIY Biotope w/ tons of plants & a living wall and potential for disaster!

No such thing as too much bio media. Bacteria will colonize according to available food. Bio balls will not be redundant, they are too big. The nitrate bacteria need near oxygenless environment with low waterflow. The larger your media(gravel) the deeper your bed will need to be. The smaller...

DIY Biotope w/ tons of plants & a living wall and potential for disaster!

Sorry, I typed that last bit while I was working, from my cell phone, and now I can't go back and edit the spelling, etc. or add any links. Anyways, you are probably best to just google "freshwater deep sand bed" or "freshwater DSB", there are a ton of discussions and a few articles to be...

DIY Biotope w/ tons of plants & a living wall and potential for disaster!

Deep sand beds are a well established practice in the salt water hobby. Basically you have bacteria to eat ammonia, and nitrites, but the bacteria that eats nitrates can only grow in dark nearly anaerobic conditions. I'm paraphrasing from my past research. A deep sand bed allows for these...

    want cycled tank at school...

Would a 10 gallon be too big? Divide it with a Hamburg matten filter, and use a small pump instead of airlift tubes, then you won't have any external equipment to deal with when moving it, and the divider acts as the filter. And you'd probably have room to add a few other little fish to make it...

DIY Biotope w/ tons of plants & a living wall and potential for disaster!

I love it! Have you thought about trying a deep sand bed to help the plants with the nitrates?

    One or two GBRs

Just to add to what was already said. In one of my past tanks, I had a single male GBR with Cories in a 29 gallon without problems. You'll be fine. It's when they are protecting eggs is when they get aggressive, just like any parent would. Basically I'm just reiterating to support the others.
