How can I help my female Gouramis?

Why are you sure they're a male/female pair? A 10 is on the small side for gouramis. They normally chase and nip (one dominates the other) unless there's enough space for the one to forget the other. Try some plants (plastic or silk are fine for this), they'll help.

    ABS pipe caves.

ABS is 100% safe and many aquarium products are made from it including a lot of filters. Its not meant to be used under pressure so its not good for supply lines in regular household plumbing, only for waste lines: its all to do with pressure and not toxicity. ABS is routinely used...

    Moon light for fresh water?

I'll spend your money all day long. Buy two. Do you think its worth your money? (I like the little night light I added to mine, use it sporadically)

    beating a dead horse...

The filter is a good place to put it. Your LFS should have filter bags for a few bucks or, as Joephys mentioned, an old nylon will do. Keeps everything well-contained and easy to monitor. Your filter, your water, your flow rates, will all effect the rate at which it dissolves and its impact...

    beating a dead horse...

I most recently put 6 tablespoons of crushed coral into a filter bag into my Eheim 2213 to help supplement the buffer in my 30g. I was going to work with 1 tablespoon per 5 gallons and take it from there. It boosted my KH to the neighborhood of 4 or 5 degrees, a little higher than I'd wanted. I...

Set me straight on CO2 injection

I likewise have very low KH straight out of the tap and crushed coral in the filter to boost. And pressurized CO2. No problems, very stable. Going with plants other than anachris is certainly one option. Excel and DIY both have low start up costs but it adds up over time. DIY was...

Just starting to plant, what fert(s) is/are a must?

I mix up a batch and then divvy it up into smaller doses. I alternate macros and micros: macros on even days, micros (Flourish) on odd. Each gets dosed three or four days a week. I mix up a potion similar to JHJ's brew, but I don't really want to do that more than once a week… 2 teaspoons...

What should I do first when setting new tank?

Plants can be a little complicated… you'll want to spend some time browsing in the Plants forum. I find it easiest to fill up the tank while planting. Put in the substrate, bring water level up to top of substrate, plant low plants, bring substrate up a bit plant medium stems, up higher again...

What rule do you use to stock tanks?

I'd likewise bet that the more experienced folks would be better at it, which is why I'm trying to get them to say something more enlightening than "I'm experienced and I do research". When I was a kid my mother wanted to get some of my grandmother's traditional recipes before they got lost...

    General Question

Your links aren't working for me (and the orange type is really hard to read)… Your keeping freshwater, no? You don't need salt… I'm not really sure what it is you want to know.

What rule do you use to stock tanks?

So when you're doing this planning up front what sorts of things are you looking at? When you're doing research what sorts of things are you looking into? When you look back on your previous experiences what sorts of lessons do you draw? Is there any way to anticipate nitrate production? Why...

What rule do you use to stock tanks?

But 36 x 12 is 36 x 12, there's no more gravel there's only more water. And more water is good. I happen to have a 36 x 12 30g: I don't think it should be stocked the same as a 45g. It has a lot less water in it. I'm just saying that the footprint isn't the end of the story: the volume is...

    Fishless cycle problems

Are you on city water or on well water? Here's your water report from 2001. The city supply is chlorinated, didn't see anything about chloramines. You can call or just assume they exist. You'll need a water conditioner (assuming you're on city water). Most folks like Prime or Amquel… I'd...

What rule do you use to stock tanks?

The theory might work fine mathematically to estimate mass but it ignores diet, activity level, etc. It doen't say anything about the relative bioload. It simplifies away the actual fish. Just going one to one: Does a 2 inch rasbora have the same bioload as a 2 inch danio? Assuming they have...

Is this a male or female paradise fish?

I'd guess female, but it'd only be a guess. Hard to say from that pic. Jinx's fish is a male. This one's a female… You can see the difference in the size and shape of the top and bottom fins. Hope that helps…

What rule do you use to stock tanks?

I've seen the 1 inch per 32 inch guideline bandied about for marine tanks: 1 per 10 to 12 was given for freshwater. There is mostly open hostility to the 1 inch per gallon rule around these parts. Generalizations, in general, tend to oversimplify. I like the area guide better than the inch...

    Lighting Question

Its certainly a nice enough lamp. Don't know the brand to say anything about the reputation. I'd swap out the actinic for the 6700/10000K bulb over in the bulb section. Be aware that they're using square pins and you might have a somewhat harder time finding those down the road. Another...

    Fishless cycle problems

A Fishless cycle is pretty catastrophic. A massive water change at the end is the procedure. What are you using as a water conditioner? Do you know if your water company adds chloramines? If you don't do a water change do your tests zero back out the next day?
