    Garlic treatment

Thanks for the advice and detailed summaries of the state of garlic research. I am considering it as a general tonic which might help my fish as much or more than the odd bit of cucumber or other fresh veg. As long as it is not know to be more harmful than other fresh veggies, I think I will try...

    Garlic treatment

So anyway - everyone who tried garlic with fishies has had good results? I haven't found garlic x-treme in any of the local pet stores, so I can just crush a clove of garlic in a garlic press and throw that in the tank for the fish? People seem to say its safe as long as you don't add too...

My (first) pic of the tank. Before and After

I agree with Jennfier, it looks like camera shake to me - which needs a support for the camera. Tripods can be quite cheap, but anything to sit your camera on will be fine. If you can't press the button softly enough, use the self timer to reduce the shake.

    pair o oscars

Don't know what things are like where you live, but near me (in the UK) some of the LFS will buy back fish which have outgrown your tanks. You could try calling round a few of them if you are stuck.

    My heater blew up...

You could order a heater from the internet/mail order from somewhere that does next day deliveries - would that be quicker? (I can't work out all the time zones or exactly when you think you can get to the store)

can anyone ID this redfinned fishy?

I think its a 'glass bloodfin' which is a bit different than normal bloodfins.

can anyone ID this redfinned fishy?

thanks, found some pics on the web and thats definately what they are :)

can anyone ID this redfinned fishy?

I have 4 of these guys, but the LFS couldn't remember what they were called: Their body is like a glass fish - you can see its silvery organs inside, and it has a red fin at the back. They are between 3/4inch and 1 1/4 inches long. Thanks

    Planted freshwater 55g community tank

Well -it's still a very new tank; Aqua-One AR980 bow front with a built in bio filter thing in the hood, and an airstone for extra oxygen. It spent 26 days having a fishless cycle, and then was fully stocked, with all the chemicals checked regularly. Another 3 weeks in and everyone is still...

    C.Loaches with red gills

Thanks for the link H3D. It doesn't seem to give any definitive answers though, since the replies on the thread question the salt warning. It also doesn't say why they believe that loaches don't like salt, whilst there are lots of people who have done the salt thing with (apparently) no adverse...

    C.Loaches with red gills

Since I am already more than half way through the salt treatment, I am loathe to suddenly change tack. I guess one option is to continue to treat the main tank with salt, but remove the 2 clown loach to a hospital tank and treat them with something else. However - I have researched the salt...

    Ich add salt or not?

I am not sure, but I think the 48 hours quoted (and around 3 days at 82*) is how long the ich things live when they are swimming about in the water. I don't think it is the total life cycle length. I am doing the salt thing at 82*, it took 10 days from the first signs (and addition of 2...

Will keep up the treatment, thanks for the fish advice.

    C.Loaches with red gills

water parameters have been checked very regularly during the whole thing. They have remained stable at: ammonia 0 nitrite 0 nitrate 30 (tap water is 20-35 round here - and the fish seem to be used to this level) PH 7.8 I will see if I can get a pic cheers

    C.Loaches with red gills

Had a nasty outbreak of ich/white spot, which only affected the clown loaches. I am treating with salt (2tsp/gallon) + temp (82F). The Ich appeared to get worse for a week (I know - it's supposed to) and 3 days ago finally dissappeared from the fish. Salt and temp are still high to eliminate the...

    ammonia confusion!!

I just managed to fishless-cycle a 45 gallon tank using ammonia. Q1 - bubbles. Shake the bottle of ammonia. If there are bubbles or foam at the top, it probably has detergent in it. If there are no bubbles, it probably has not. If the tank has just been filled, it could be air or chemicals...

    How long for ANY NitrItes?

glasstapper - its a bit different in a fishy cycle where you have to keep the ammonia low for the fishes, thn in a fishless cycle - where you have dangerously high levels of ammonia (but no fish!) to promote fast growth of the bacterias. (you can also raise the temperature too) As far as I...

    How long for ANY NitrItes?

I had 0 on day 1, 0.1 on day 2, 0.3 on day 4 and 1.6 by day 7 (45 gallon). Themp was about 80F, and the tank was seeded with a couple of cups of water, some unglazed ceramic pots and filter squeezings from and established tank.

    Fishless Cycling Issues...

It stands to reason that maintaining 5ppm will be as good if not better than a daily dose which I conducted; my ammonia has spiked and dropped, so when that happened, I had a big enough colony to eat 20ppm in a day probably. This is irrelevant to the final stage of the tank (apart from the extra...

    Fishless Cycling Issues...

SirWired, thankyou. That is the recipe I used, and so far it seems to be working. Ammonia is now zero, and I am now waiting for the nitirites to drop. For me this recipe worked. This recipe is very prevalent on the web, and is unambiguous. It may not be the best recipe, or even be wrong and I...
