What?s a good solution to disinfect plants with?

I guess you need to decide.. www.jtbaker.com/msds/englishhtml/P6005.htm You can pick snails and eggs off the plants, or buy a clown loach or two. BBA is easy to deal with in the tank Jay

What?s a good solution to disinfect plants with?

Tuvok... Sure I guess there is that effect. I do it more to get rid of all the loose dirt and plant material. It also gives me the opportunity to closely examine the plant condition, do necessary pruning etc. I do not worry about snails, my tank is algae free enough so as to not support a...

    BBA Driving me nuts

Seachem, on their web site, has said that there is a problem with anacharis and Excel. I have experienced poor anacharis health and growth with the use of Excel. Seachem suggests dosing every other day. I gave up growing anacharis in my tank because I like the net positive benefits of excel. Jay

    Slow Growing Black Algae

Hmm not really. The trick is sufficient quantity of CO2, which is stable throughout the photo period. DIY in a 55 gal is tough. You are not going to starve bba as it requires far fewer nutrients than the plants. You need more co2, at least 25 ppm, or more, consistently. Your lights on time...

    Slow Growing Black Algae

Sounds like a bba. But you have left out a lot of information. What is your tank size? This does not convey balance to me. I do not see that you dose PO4, and your NO3 could probably be a little higher. Increasing your PO4 will help with the green spot algae. What is your ppm...

    Just tested nitrates, 160ppm!!! HELP!

I assume you know what your tap water parameters are, right? 3/4 teaspoon of "KNO3" will give you a bump of 14ppm in 46 gallons. I have no idea what is in "Grants" do you? That leaves the plant spikes, that IME, need to be used and handled with some caution so as not to leach into the...

    Supplementing Ca easily

Good question! If you are using one of the many fert information charts, you need to dial in the correct formula. I buy all my dry ferts from Greg Watson and his is CaCl2.2H2O. Just my 2 cents Jay

    CO2 Injection Rip-off....Why?

Rob..I have a little 10# co2 cylinder sitting next to my tank in the Sun Room. The pressure in that tank new is what? Eight Hundred Pounds pre Sq. Inch? A small rocket no? The cork in that cylinder (rocket) is my regulator and needle valve, and I am going to go cheapo?...I don' think so...

What kind of (pressurized) CO2 diffuser do you use?

John R Same principal here, with the differences being that I have my canister output at the top in order to have some surface circulation, and a little larger powerhead at the bottom. The bottom powerhead is where the micro bubbles are sucked up and blown down the back wall of the tank. I...

    Aquasafe and iron/fertilisers

Hi mdowdall...Welcome Are you adding the stuff only at water change? I think the "heavy metals" in question are copper, zinc, lead, and manganese. I would check with your local water department's water quality report and see if there is an issue. if not why treat for it? I do not use...

Question about CO2/Fertilizer & fish safety & using Airstones.

I think it would be time well spent, looking through the excellent "Stickies" on CO2 and Fertilization at the top of the forum. It will save you time, money, frustration, or disaster. In the mean time, let me try to help a little. Yes an air stone will gas off CO2. Remember CO2 is a...

    260w 48" fixture on a 55g..Too much?

I agree with everyone. That is a lot of light for a non CO2 tank (DIY is going to get really tedious very quickly), and you are going to be hard pressed to get the ppm up to 25-30. It sounds like you have a 4 light fixture (4 sixty five watt lights). Why not turn off two of them and drop...
