    banjo cats

I have 4! They're quite inactive, but swarm for food. I think it's adorable, but may not be for everyone. They hide in the sand the rest of the time. They only come out in the "dark", but it doesn't have to be pitch black. I feed them with the room lights on and they have no problem with it.

    Relocating Fish tank Help.

I'd go (and in fact did) with #2. Just moved to a new apartment ('bout an hours drive away from the old one) and did this with all 8 (yup, EIGHT) tanks. 2 are saltwater, and one is a 90 gallon. IMO, anything over about 20 gallons is too much to try and move with water and gravel in it. Of...

Is this a shrimp, or a crayfish?

There are some other "macro" shrimp. I'm not too familiar with them, or how big they get though.

    Mystery Problem

Not much experience with this type of problem, but here are some random thoughts that may help: Maybe it's worth trying a drip acclimation? If your water is significantly different from the place you buy them, this could help. Since plecs and corys are catfish, they're scaleless, so may be...

    Sweet Potatoe?

I sometimes feed raw sweet potato to my plecs (BNs and a royal). Sadly, one potato is still too much, and goes bad before I've fed it all to them. I cut it into reasonable sized slices and just plop a slice in. One really nice thing about it is that, unlike zucchini, the raw pieces sink on their...

    Worried about ropefish

I don't know about ropefish specifically, but I have treated ick with Quick Cure at a half dose for sensitive fish (catfish).

Do you guys think powerheads are reall necessary?

I think it's mostly a matter of preference. If you have a species that prefers high flow (like those from a fast moving river) I think it's beneficial. If you have sand, it's definitely beneficial since they blow all the junk to one spot and give it a much cleaner look. Out of my 6 FW tanks...

    Warm Vs. Cold... Hmm

I definitely use warm. I usually aim for about tank temp, sometimes 5 degrees cooler (Fahrenheit). Most of the time I go by feel, since my skin is pretty sensitive to temps, other times I use the digital thermometer - just depends on the day.

surprisingly low nitrate reading - what does it mean?

Last week, I decided to be lazy and not do my scheduled water change unless nitrate was high. I tested all of my tanks (6 FW, 1 SW). All 6 FW tanks tested at 0 nitrate (they have been set up over a year and no major changes). In the past (I don't check regularly) the readings have been 5 on my...

MAJOR PROBLEM WITH CATCHING 7" LOACH!

IME, the best way to net fast fish is to move SLOW. I've never tried to catch a loach, but have netted other fast critters this way. I just slowly herd them into a corner. Easier if decor can be removed, but doable either way, I think.

    Stocking ideas for my 20l

I wouldn't put bamboo shrimp with tiger barbs or anything 'nippy'. Those shrimp are defenseless. I would suggest cherry shrimp - more colorful than ghosts and they breed if given somewhere to hide.

    Anxiety/OCD and aquariums

I'm pretty similar. I suspect I have mild OCD, anxiety, hypochondria, paranoia. My problems subside when I'm pleasantly busy and working out regularly. The only time washing my hands too much is a problem is winter - they get more dried out so I have to use a lot of lotion. Then I have to make...

    love my bamboo shrimp!

I have 3! I <3 these guys too. I've had 2 of them for a while (over a year, I think - but I'm bad with time so I'm not sure). The shrimp on your sunken ship is a girl : ) The males' first pair of legs (not the feeder arms) are much thicker. You'll find that when doing well, they poop a lot...

    Advanced reading books...

I highly recommend finding the nearest university and taking full advantage of their library. I have over 20 books out on a WIDE variety of topics. Everything from "Ecology of the Planted Aquarium" (by Diana Walstad), "Copepods in aquaculture", to "mathematics in china and japan". The aquarium...

Contest tanks, where is the hardware?

I think I saw one contestant who got criticized (by the judges, no less) for taking pics of the tank without removing the hardware. If I ever manage a show tank, I will definately be using a sump (minimum gear in the display possible is ++ in my book).

    Special food for cats?

My catfish get flake food, but I hold it underwater so that it sinks (otherwise the other fish eat it before they get any).

    earthworm suprise

Takes 2 to tango : P (Earthworms have both sexes, but it still takes 2 to mate - they pair up together with both pairs of sex organs, and both are 'impregnated', for lack of a better word.)

    Macro Shrimp

I have asian filter shrimp (aka bamboos, + a million other names). I adore them. I'd love some africans, but they're expensive and hard to come by, so it'll probably be a while before I get some (if I do). I don't think I can decide if I like other macros until I see them in person. Pics on...
