put the betta in a cup with a see through bottom and look for a little white dot on their underside. females have the dot, males don't ( at least so far in my experience i haven't seen a male with one). i dunno about just basing it on coloration, some of my females are just as vibrant as the males.

the problem with blaming an entire chain is that every store is different (as i've said before). i also don't think its fair to assume that every store in a chain is going to be horrible and every privately owned lfs is going to be amazing. i think in my area there are about 4 of my chain store...

the betta may be aggressive towards the guppys (especially males) based on the long tails. you can try it but keep a really close eye on them to make sure they aren't getting beat up in there.

imo it matters on the individual store as well as just events happening in the store. you will find certain stores that look better than others or seem to be taking better care of the animals. in my district alone i think every store gives off slightly different impressions of the chain...
