You don't want to add any fish to a tank with nitrites. There is a thread in the newbie section near the top. It's about cycling. That's the first thing you need to know about the water.

Sounds like you have a stocking plan that is too ambitious for that size tank. For starters, Discus like to be in groups, and that size would be tight for one breeding pair. It's simply too small for that plan. Before you worry about ph, you should read the sticky thread on cycling your tank.

You have nitrite? Are you adding ammonia in order to do a fishless cycle? Are you using a liquid test kit or strips? What kind of fish do you plan to get?

Looks very nice! Feed them and keep the water clean and they will grow quickly.

I don't think anyone will be able to know what else that may have gone wrong, if something did, but that is enough of a ph difference that it may have hurt the fish. Particularly if the fish was going through the cycling period.

What are your water parameters? Any chance you can post a picture? Where is it coming from? Could it be feces?
