what is going on with my tank?

Like Tcos said above vaccuuming the gravel should help a lot. As for the blackout situation... Turn off the lights unless you're viewing the tank. If the tank is getting a lot of light from windows in your home them try keeping the blinds closed as much as possible. To be honest, I only turn on...

Oh' it's that new guy with the very long post!

First off, you're an awesome father. You don't see too many people really taking an interest in the things that interest their children. I was roughly the same age as your daughter when I got my first aquarium. It was unbelievable to me and I learned a lot from it. Obviously the aquarium bug...

what is going on with my tank?

Also try cutting down on the amount of light the tank is exposed to. If the tank is getting a good amount of sunlight from a window you should close the blinds. Also, it wouldn't hurt to rinse the replacement filters before you put them into the filter.

Recently moved, now using well water

You'll be fine so no worries. Might want to check the ammonia levels regularily though. Had quite a few people who asked to have their well water tested for aquarium purposes and their ammonia levels were off the charts straight from the tap.

    BlueGills

I've been able to keep bluegill without any problems. I kept them with flagfish, sailfin mollies, bass and an assortment of other fish I caught with a cast net. Once the bluegill are big enough I found that they can really display some nice colors if you mimmic their natural habitat. Feeding...

can I turn off my filtration 3hrs/day??

Turning off your filter will dry out a good portion of your biowheel killing the bacteria that have grown on it. LIke others have mentioned above, you can raise your water level and try what chkltcow suggested above. If your tank is heavily stocked, however, this might reduce the amount of...

    Air Conditioning Water Run Off

An AC unit works basically the same as a dehumidifyer. Therefore the water should be just as safe as one or the other. I'm using two dehumidifiers right now since my apartment flooded due to the above average amount of rain fall. Thank God in heaven that Hurricane missed me! Off topic, but I...

    Kuhli loaches "in season"?

Seasonal can mean two things... Either they aren't breeding this time of year or the country from which they are caught in the wild will close their borders to shipping out native species in order to protect the various species. If temperature is a concern most if not all shippers/farms will...

    cichlids?Less agresssive ones...HELP

You can use a bit of salt... Just make sure it has no iodine in it like table salt. I have seen a product called "Cichlid Salt" in the stores so you should be able to find some of that. The fish you claim to have do not make bubble nests so whatever he/she was doing was something else.

    First time parent

They probably won't hatch until after you have returned from your trip. You don't have to worry about feeding them until after they have hatched and the yolk sack has been absorbed so you have plenty of time. I hatch my own baby brine shrimp to feed my fry....I suppose you could use what you...

    Expensive Discus

My suggestion is to read through as much info as possible and come up with what you think is needed and not needed. Somethings work for some people and not for others. You could do a sponge filter setup, but that would look like *** and destroy the purpose of putting them on display. Yes, some...

    Native species tanks...

Most of that legal mumbo jumbo is pertaining to fish used for food purposes....salmon etc. To be honest the game and wildlife people aren't going to raid your house for having native species in your aquarium. Pardon the pun, but they have much bigger fish to fry! :D I've kept fish that I...

does anyone know about a supplier that will ship to your door IN CANADA

Well, they certainly are canadian, but it looks like the only ship dry goods. I'm really suprised there aren't more online fish stores in Canada. Maybe it's difficult to obtain a license to do so?

Craft store artificial plants okay in aquariums?

Usually the smaller privately owned stores have the really tacky stuff. You may want to check the saltwater section at your LFS. Sometimes they have some pretty odd plastic plants that might suit her fancy a little better. Still though, i pity a fish in a tank with tacky plants! lol

    Native species tanks...

Wow, I really didn't expect so many people would be interested in the same thing. Don't assume your ecosystems don't have a good variety! If you can get a hold of one get a casting net and you'll be amazed at what you can pull up. chkltcow - Sorry! I'll have to go check your thread. :) About...

    Native species tanks...

Am I the only person who has a tank of native species fish? The idea is to collect fish as well as plants from your local area water ways etc etc. To my suprise I was able to collect flag fish and sailfin mollies among other things. I really didn't expect it to turn out to be anything...
