Black swimming dots during water change

Hi all- This is just to satisfy my curiosity. Changed the water in some small freshwater tanks, and I noticed tiny little black dots that are swimming around. I'm assuming they're some sort of creature/insect or such, but have no clue what they are. I was wondering if they were shrimplets...

    java fern transplant question

Hi all. Thanks for help. I've cut and attached the cuttings to another decoration, time will tell whether it grows well. Another question though - the large Java fern leaves have plantlets growing, some of which are getting somewhat large. However, they haven't broken off, and actually show no...

    java fern transplant question

Hi all- I have a java fern that is currently attached to a decoration on one side. It's grown a long rhizome off of it across to the other side and beyond, maybe 6" at least? I was wondering if it was ok to cut a portion of the rhizome off of the end to glue it to a new decoration, or if it was...

    red cherry shrimp color

Now that I've had some time to search online, there's some suggestions for maybe boiled carrot to give them carotene for coloration. Or other types of fish food. I use Tetracolor fish flakes in general, which has increased pigmentation, but there's also Astaxanthin products. I guess it doesn't...

    red cherry shrimp color

Hm, not sure then. I've had them at least 5-6 yrs, and although they started mostly red, I have the whole spectrum from black-dark grey-light grey-spotted red, and (a very few) sakura rated. Plus those white-ish (but not pure white) albino ones. It used to be more red, now it's gone more grey...

replacement light for 16" 5.5 aquarium

Hi all- Got a (I believe) 5.5 gallon tank from sister, who got it on a freecycle site. It's an All-glass aquarium brand, with hood, and has all the basics (filter/heater). I've set it up for my daughter, using water/filters from an existing, long established tank. Everything works, except the...

    red cherry shrimp color

Hi all- I bought (online order) of RCS years ago. These weren't sakura rated, just plain RCS (and they were red). Most died, but the few that survived, bred. And bred. And bred. It's been years and many generations since then, and the colors are mostly grey or some speckled red. Occasionally...

    java ferns substrate/attachments

Thanks. I'll try the superglue method, maybe that will attach easier to the big log decoration and it'll grow better. Fishorama, the RCS in my tank love the java moss. Though I do have to clean it out sometimes, since it can grow everywhere. It's also a good hiding place for my fry.

    java ferns substrate/attachments

Hi all- I have java ferns in a 20 gal freshwater tank. I've been growing them (slowly) for years, and main ones are attached to a couple of aquarium decorations. It keeps having plantlets spawn off, and I've tried to grow them - one went into an old foam filter (growing nicely), but am trying...

    pregnant guppy stuck?

I can't really put a date to it, as I'm not really tracking them. They give birth so much, I have to periodically sell off the excess, as my tank gets overloaded. I try to keep the older ones though, of which I have three, and this is one of them. I would say at least a year or longer in age...

    pregnant guppy stuck?

Yes, her gravid spot isn't dark, it's more reddish color, which I thought confusing, but I thought maybe it was possible, as I see other females the same. And she is old, she's one of three oldest and largest females in the tank, and has given birth many times before. Her bloating/squre shape...

    pregnant guppy stuck?

Hi all- I've had guppies for years, and have had lots of fry. Have never seen them give birth, but find the fry when they do. There is one guppy who is tremendously pregnant. Huge/bloated, completely square shaped. I moved her to a smaller enclosure inside of the main tank, since the males kept...

    finding replacement aquarium top

Thanks! That actually might be a viable solution, though not sure how long it'll last in the long run. I'll give it a try.

    finding replacement aquarium top

No, there's no extra clips that I could see. I may fabricate my own and attach it w/epoxy, as I tried a different LFS, and there doesn't seem to be any good substitute.

    finding replacement aquarium top

I would think so, but it's a question of fit. I'll try other brands besides Aqueon, since that looks like it won't work in the long run.

    finding replacement aquarium top

Yes, that's what I'm referring to. I got a 24" from Aqueon to test, but it barely covers the opening, which probably isn't good. another 1mm smaller and it would've plopped into the tank. It looks like the lip around the hood is smaller than it used to be.

    finding replacement aquarium top

Thanks, I'll look for Aqueon at the LFS and see if they have something that fits.

    finding replacement aquarium top

Unfortunately, the hinge that broke is part of the main piece of the hood. The part that opens doesn't have the hinge itself.

    finding replacement aquarium top

Hi all- I have a 24" aquarium that I got almost 20 yrs ago. I have no idea who the manufacturer is. The hood on top has a glass panel, on which sits a fluorescent light bar, and there's a hinged portion in the front which you can open to feed the fish. The back strip has an opening of maybe 2"...

    low ph - suggestions?

pH after off-gassing was still in the 7+ range, so it should be good in that respect. I think the drop was due to the Amquel water changes I had been doing to keep the tank params somewhat normal.
