I agree with everyone about not worrying about the pH, but if you absolutely had to, I would go for some nice tannin leaching wood or peat moss over putting acetic acid in the tank.

obviously you removed him from the water for the pic....anyway, rams are pretty sensitive. Does he have pop eye or is that just the picture? I forget what all that can indicate, but maybe a clue.

That's great! My checker barbs did the same thing. I actually found the fry later in a different tank I had moved a bunch of java fern into. The eggs must have been in the plants. They grew up and now I have more checker barbs!

I've seen 26 and 28 gallon bowfront style tanks at the various big box pet stores. They remind me of a smaller version of my 36 bowfront. Is that kind of what you are looking for? Honestly I think they would stick out a bit more than a 20 tucked crosswise in the corner, since its face would be flat.

if you want cheaper/waterproof, there are a lot of stick on vinyl wall decals, some pretty good sized, made from either actual photos of fish or art. I've seen them on amazon. I think they are neat :) I would spend the decorating money on stuff for the tank, but that's just me! I know you said...

what type of water do you have? Hard water, soft water? A 10 gallon with one dwarf gourami, and you want one or two more fish, not tetras, not cory, not schooling? Are you avoiding bottom dwellers in general, or just corys? I think a couple of platies would be great unless you have super soft...

I second pearl gouramis, also moonlight gouramis get 6-7 inches and can be gorgeous. Angelfish are great, you could have more than 2 but they do pair off and spawn and get aggressive. Does it have to be "a" centerpiece fish? You could do with a group of some of the rainbowfish that get decent...

great assortment of fish! I love to see people keeping NA natives and some of the less common species. When I was your age I had 7 fish tanks, all in my bedroom. Now I'm in my 40s and still a fish nut. Let me tell you, it gets better as you get older! :) more space, more money, your own place....

also agree the pleco is adding a lot of bioload....congos can get very pretty once settled into a densely planted tank. I would rehome the pleco, go nuts with plants and add some more congos. I think they would be gorgeous in there. A school of 5 in a lightly planted tank may not be showing off...

poor guy, he sounds pretty injured. I would leave him be. Chasing around and catching seems to panic shrimp the most. You gave him a good home and you care about him, and these things happen....it is sad so i'm sorry it happened.

the gouramis can be aggressive...if they attacked the other fish it may just be circumstantial evidence that someone on the bottom ate the corpses. (trying to be all CSI here). Maybe the one gourami then killed the other one? Although I don't know how it disappeared. Sometimes a fish corpse is...

Sparkling gouramis? Lots of nice nano fish out there. Or do you prefer a single fish?

maybe some otos as long as you keep good water parameters? They like to be in little groups but only get about an inch or so long.

are there any chemicals that could have gotten into the water? You are dechlorinating and all that? (I assume you are, but just double checking). I would stop adding new fish for now. Your tank is still new so let things settle a bit. I'm sorry you've lost some, it does make it frustrating...
