Thanks...may give that a shot. I've been feeding them over the summer and they are much less afraid of me now, but still skittish. Bought a big enough/long enough landing net, haven't tried it yet as I havent had the need. Will try that in the Spring. If that doesnt work I'll look into...
I'm in tune with the 2" radius plan. That will give them plenty of room. If you start to get melt, immediately pinch of that leaf's stem at the base of the plant. Even if you pinch off all the leaves due to melt it may come back...been there done it.
Agreed with above comments on using cycled media from an established tank. Moved from Ohio to Kansas (~850 miles) a few years ago. Brought several 5 gal buckets of fish with a couple inches of mature tank gravel on the bottom. Lost 2 fish in move, but no problems establishing new tanks once...
I have some moss that is either Taiwan or Christmas...and native American Val which can grow to 36"" plus. I dont check AC often, email me n0dlb@hotmail.com. Probably getting close to warm enough to ship soon.
I had a bird leave me the front half of a lovely red/blue crayfish on a fence post in my backyard last summer. Putting traps out in my pond and the local lake in the Spring. If I find out where they are I'll gladly share. I'm in Eastern KS.
Might have missed this in the thread...did you determine what part of the filter was leaking?
If it leaks again- BEFORE disturbing it, take a flashlight and look to see where it is leaking...should be plenty obvious whether it's the power unit oring or overflowing from the top.
I run my HOBs...
I'm leaning towards bristlenose (ancistrus) also...which is fine in a 20. It may be a female or a young male; I've seen 2.5" males with bristles and some that didnt grow any til 3.5".
Ditto on checking Petco for $ per gallon sale if you have one nearby. I suggest an Aquaclear 30...
Thanks for rescuing... As stated, if you can post a picture that would help with ID. Everything stated above is correct. I wouldnt feel bad if it went 3-4 days without a water change then work up to a week or so. It's one 2" fish in 5g. If you post your location, maybe we can find a...
Found one of the 10's has a broken impeller...bottom plastic under magnet was loose. repaired but let's make it $35 for the whole lot shipped. n0dlb@hotmail.com

I'd use a pretty good-sized pump or powerhead, you're lifting then going down. In theory that creates a siphon, but you have to lift the water level back to the drain opening. Or if you already have something, try it and go bigger if needed.
Wouldnt use a crate under the bin...
The more you experiment and experience, the more you will find things don't have to be "as expensive"...for example using river gravel from the DIY store instead of "aquarium gravel, & if you have a Petco in range they have great tank deals a few times per year.
