    Emersed aquarium ideas

I am currently thinking about setting up an emersed planted aquarium out of my long abandoned 29g setup. I think I want to move itnto a bay window (it has very good sunlight.) and make it lightless/filterless/near maintenance free setup. My current thoughts have the plants being the main...

    Riccia is sick

My new 29 gallon is starting to stabilize. fishes seem to have moved in. Algae is receding and I'm seeing new growth in some of the plants. the problem is the riccia is lingering at best. It has turned yellowish. I am letting it float so its really close to lights (~3 inches) My water...

    Best nitrate suckers?

have you considered a denitrating coil or an algae reactor? I had a 20g with a severe swordtail overpopulation (wouldnt ..stop ..breeding :) ).. it was generating like 40-80 ppm nitrate a week. that's AFTER heavily planting it. I could see the hornwort and java moss grow. Any kind of plant...

    DIY CO2

hmm ..chopsticks. According to the great oracle Google, i could use those and replace it every 1-3 months, or i could buy a $20 glass diffuser that imitates this and have it forever.... or use a cigarette filter (spun glass last time i checked)...choices. My rainbow fish would probably...

    DIY CO2

Sorry, I'm not trying to hijack SiNiStEr's thread, but what kind of diffuser do you recommend? I am actually looking for one. All the ones I've seen so far are huge and ugly (taking up pretty much the entire corner of tank) and require a power head. i saw this multilevel spiral ladder...

    DIY CO2

cool rig. I am currently using a hagen yeast c02 generator. (this one here: http://www.bigalsonline.com/StoreCatalog/ctl3684/cp18478/si1501563/cl1/plant_gro_co2_natural_system?&query=hagen+co2&queryType=0&hits=12&offset=) It worked fine for a 10g but ive recently moved up to a 29g. it is...

    Plant behavior

My tank is finally cycled and populated. Now that nitrates are being created, the plants are starting to grow again. I am seeing some strange growth though. first off. I have a water wisteria plant with frilly fern like leaves. on the back side a new branch spontaneously started growing...

new tank. almost ready for fish.

4 -5 rainbows, a rubber nose pleco and some undecided fillers (probably cories) to bring it to full capacity. I have fish in there now. have some pictures i can attach if i have time.

new tank. almost ready for fish.

Ill try a full tank shot when I get home. I will warn you, tank is still pretty ratty. plants are still pretty young as well. Also i prefer a more natural tank rather than a perfectly landscaped one. Next time i fishless cycle it will be without lights or plants... the algae control is insane...

    Ripley's Aquarium, TN

I love that place. too bad they don't get new different things more often. i get bored easy. I have probably 800 pictures i took in there. about 300 in focus ..and about 50 of them printable. Yay for 16gb HDSD cards!!

new tank. almost ready for fish.

My new 29g finally cycled. here are a few pics of its current inhabitants. once i am satisfied its stable i will actually get some fish. here is some random water lilly bulb that was barely lingering in my old 10g i let self destruct. it has exploded in the new tank (still less than 4...

    fishless cycling compatible algae control

Blue green algae. Also known as cyanobacteria. its can be a slimy transparent blue/green slime over everything, a opaque bright green mold like stuff that seems to crawl over the plants(you turn the plant over the stuff will crawl back to the light side) it can also be free floating little...

    fishless cycling compatible algae control

ok .. i decided to nuke the bga before i get fish and guess what.... first morning without nitrites .. doh!!. well i guess this is a good test to see if this this affects a bio filter. a newly established biofilter is the most sensitive to change. 5 more days of fishlessness while i finish...

    fishless cycling compatible algae control

I just did a 48h complete blackout followed by heavy vacuuming of everything. I'm following this up with a couple of days indirect room light only (everything i have is lowish light anyway. except the riccia which doesn't look to hot. Ehh not going to kill me if i lose it). Also i...

    fishless cycling compatible algae control

I am cycling a 29g tank an I've been stuck in nitrite phase for almost 3 weeks now. the tank is heavily planted which complicates my problem. I have an algae bloom that is smothering my plants. I'm pretty sure its BGA also. during the process about 4 red ramshorn snails have hatched and have...

    Yet Another Fishless Cycling Thread

it could be going straight to nitrate. If your seeding is enough to eat 4ppm ammonia a day from the start, it probably has enough bacteria to move what it can eat on to nitrAte as well. If this is true, i expect you will see a mini nitrite spike once you see the ammonia disappearing entirely...

    29g ...almost cycled

yep . i had a small setback when i assumed that the >5.0 would not reach much higher than that ..once i saw ammonia consumption drop and BGA start to grow an inch deep a day i did a dilution test. at 100x dilution i saw about 5ppm ..still maybe more. i think that put me in the 50-100ppm range...

    29g ...almost cycled

thanks for suggestion but regular danios fall into the "sucked into filter" range. maybe not since they swim so fast. they are not very colorful either. i like the glowing "tron" lines the giants have under the right light. if i went back to golden killi's do you think they would harass the...

    29g ...almost cycled

this maybe? they are young so have no color yet but body shape is similar. its not the "boseman" (?) or turquoise. http://members.tripod.com/extreme_skier/fish/rainbow.JPG hrm .. what about the danios? They can actually get larger from my research (they continuously grow due to some genetic...
