FS Milwaukee MA957 CO2 Regulator - Ithaca, NY - Free Ship to Lower 48 or Pickup

I've been out of the fishkeeping/aquaculture game since I moved 3 years ago. I got the regulator shortly before moving and have never even taken it out of the box, it still in the bubble wrap! This is a great regulator, it even has a solenoid and bubble counter included. Normally they...

    Back in the hobby

Gotcha, thanks for the info! I think there's a pool supply store somewhere near here, I'll have to call and see if they carry it. Good to know I can use my Python on it too, I wasn't able to do that too well with play sand. How much should I look to get for ~3" coverage?

    Back in the hobby

Thanks for the point to the sunsun filter thread, I checked it out and looks like people have had good experiences with them in addition to the great price. Top of my hit list now! One of the problems I had with play sand was the odd "gray" areas that would appear under the surface. Any...

    Back in the hobby

I did check CL, unfortunately there's not much aquarium supplies within an hours drive right now, just some 10g supplies. I've got plenty of those already :)

    Back in the hobby

It's been over a year since all of my tanks came down in order to move into our first house. Life has kept me very busy, but I am finally ready to get my 55 back up and running. I'm still in the beginning stages of planning, but I was thinking of an Amazon theme with 1-2 pairs of Angelfish, a...

    Ich genome sequencing

I thought this was a pretty interesting article about some discoveries they made while sequencing Ichthyophthirius multifiliis' genome. They've discovered new types of bacteria that dwell within Ich, and hopefully can use this new information to develop a new treatment. University of Georgia...

    Interesting observation.

    Natural fertilizer.

Is Java Ferns really the best?

No, not the best by far. You want something that is a fast grower. Those will use up more nutrients.

    WTB Super RED Cherry Shrimp

In my experience they do breed quickly. I started with 10 and had over 200 a few months later.

What is my best option here?

I would be hesitant to add more fish as the bioload is already near max and shrimp will most likely become a snack for your bettas. What is your maintenance schedule and are you dosing ferts and co2? If there is an imbalance here, straightening that out can clear up algae.

Clear Leaves, Dead Otto, holes in leaves and other maladies

Try some of the fert tabs near the roots of your swords and see if that helps.
  13. StereoKills

What do you think of this?

I haven't used it personally, but I remember hearing around here that they last 4-6 weeks (dependent on tank size of course).

    Do you ever prune roots?

Anubias and Java Fern are a little different because you can cut the rhizome (sometimes mistaken for the main root) and propagate it that way without much damage to the leaves.

Clear Leaves, Dead Otto, holes in leaves and other maladies

Same deal here with the Eco Complete. The nutrients in it get used up after a while (for me it was a few months). After that, the root feeders like Swords need some additional substrate fertilization to compensate.

    Do you ever prune roots?

It depends on the plant type honestly. Stem plants are usually trimmed by cutting the stalk. The upper half will continue to grow normally if planted, the bottom half will generally start growing two shoots from the cut. If the plant is a heavy root feeder, than cutting the roots can have a...
