No, not the best by far. You want something that is a fast grower. Those will use up more nutrients.

In my experience they do breed quickly. I started with 10 and had over 200 a few months later.

I would be hesitant to add more fish as the bioload is already near max and shrimp will most likely become a snack for your bettas. What is your maintenance schedule and are you dosing ferts and co2? If there is an imbalance here, straightening that out can clear up algae.

Try some of the fert tabs near the roots of your swords and see if that helps.

I haven't used it personally, but I remember hearing around here that they last 4-6 weeks (dependent on tank size of course).

Anubias and Java Fern are a little different because you can cut the rhizome (sometimes mistaken for the main root) and propagate it that way without much damage to the leaves.

Same deal here with the Eco Complete. The nutrients in it get used up after a while (for me it was a few months). After that, the root feeders like Swords need some additional substrate fertilization to compensate.
