Can we ID this plant please?

In order to get it to root properly you need to cut the plant no more than 1/4" below the node (where the leaves attach). The node contains a region called a meristem where the plant can grow new tissue from.

    Ordering aquatic plant seeds online

They are selling grass seed & fertilizer as "Aquatic Seeds" from China recently. It's a complete scam.

Where do the Bacteria Come From?

^ LOL "It's alive", when you post stuff like that, it freaks people out. Truth can be hard to deal with sometimes. Yep it's true most of the nitrifying bacteria come in on the water. Other organisms and bacteria do colonize the tank from dust particles, water, plants, with fish (externally...

    low light plants and substrates

Purchasing a beginner dry fert mix would be a good idea. You can find micro/macro blends online by searching for "Dry Aquarium Fertilizer". Crypts can feed through their roots and leaves. They can grow very slow or surprisingly fast depending upon the conditions. All aquatic plants benefit...

Critters to go through the sand while carpeting

If the plants are healthy and growing the roots create pores in the substrate. These pores prevent the build up of nasties. I'm going on 4 years with a sand capped with gravel substate. No stirring of the substrate at all. You actually don't want anything disturbing the roots. Any...

    Fertilizer

They do sell some macro/micro mixes at some of the online places. Generally with a low tech tank you don't need much ferts. I only fertilize my tank after a water change (once or twice per month) One order for me last 6months on my 125. As for the lighting levels. Happy vals will quickly...

    cloudy water...bacteria bloom?

Micron filter or charcoal can help clean it up if you are impatient. It generally clears up in a few weeks on its own however. I've had frequent water changes help this out as well (3-4 50% in a week.)

I got yelled at in lfs today

Well if we want a good argument about common practices in the breeding of dogs and fish then I'm in. Can I alternate my sides of the fence every post? I buy inbreds but try to always cross them in my tanks for the next generation. I also only get mutts (on average superior to purebreds) for...

Help!!! My sons fish is leaning against the side of his tank and is not moving.

Que brought up his old thread. I just had to go back in time a bit more. The 3 year old is now 10.

Algae outbreak in new planted aquarium

Sounds like you have too much light and not enough fertilizer for the plants. What kind of lighting do you have over the tank?

My first planted tank, a journal

The DIY CO2 into the filter like that will just off gas and not be available for the plants. Injecting CO2 like that works with canister filters. For a DIY diffuser the chopstick/bamboo skewer method works amazingly well. Not to scare you but you are heading on the fast lane to and algae...

    Chemistry issues with Fishless cycle.

Aww don't type while cooking dinner. I meant to say. the addition of NO and NO3 reduces the pH.

    Chemistry issues with Fishless cycle.

We'll actually ammonia is a base because locks up protons. pH is an inverse log scale of the number of free protons. Acid solutions have a bunch of them free. Neutral solutions are balanced. Basic solutions have a shortage. Nitrite and nitrate are actually nitrous acid and nitric acid...

    Finally! Nitrates staying under 20ppm!

Nitrate is a negatively charged ion that forms nitric acid in water... so yes high nitrates can lower the pH. However this will only be a problem if there is low buffering capacity of the water.

    Just starting out

The tank is not really that tall. You don't need to build up the substrate provided you upgrade that light. CO2 is not required for carpeting all carpeting plants it just make it easier. You can also add in flourish excel instead of CO2. It also takes less time to get the carpet to grow in...

Kids came home with two 'carnival comets'...

Definitely need to move those guys into the in-laws pond after a month or 2 of qt. Unless you have room for the 75 gallon tank those little fish will need soon.

    Just starting out

When you first start out into planted tanks the information out there is overwhelming. Some of the technical details that people go into is very heavy. Carpeting plants are not that hard. You just need to choose the right plant for your setup and care level. The only way to really...

Black beard algae in a non planted tank.

Whats feeding it is too much light and fish waste. Turn off the light and it will go away. Washing the fake plant in a hydrogen peroxide solution will also kill it.

    Duckweed in a Goldfish Tank

I used to keep a 10 gallon tank for duckweed. I kept a betta and guppies in the tank with it. Sponge filter to keep down the surface agitation down and prevent filter clogging issues. I also planted some slower growing plants (anubis, java fern & moss). Over fed and fertilized with excessive...
